Age Of Empires 3: Definitive Edition has made several welcome changes and additions to the strategy classic. We go over a handful of the biggest changes here.

UI Changes

The user interface has undergone some significant changes, reducing the amount of real estate it takes up and moving certain elements around. As you can see in the screenshots below, the minimap has been moved the bottom right corner of the screen, and the unit information/building options panels are now on the left, taking up much less space.

Also noticeable in this screenshot are changes to the titles of certain Ages in the game. The ‘Discovery’ Age is now the ‘Exploration’ Age, and the ‘Colonial’ Age is now the ‘Commerce’ Age.

Swedes And Incans

Sweden and Inca have been added to the game as fully-fledged factions. Sweden, for the most part, functions much like its European faction counterparts, but their unique House replacements throw off the early economic strategy a bit, by themselves also gather any nearby resources. Place them near mines or in clumps of trees and watch the resources (slowly) trickle in.

The Inca, for their part, most closely resemble the Aztecs. Like the Swedes, they also have unique House replacements – theirs house more people, while also providing a steady trickle of Food.

Historical Battles And The Art Of War

Everything New And Changed In Age Of Empires 3 Definitive Edition

Only one historical battle was available in the beta, but it was a unique challenge. This mode closely resembles some of the best-produced campaign missions, but with each scenario being a one-off – presumably, there will be no need to unlock each scenario in order.

The Art Of War mode may seem to be aimed at new players specifically, and while it is a great way to learn the game if you’re new to it, I found just the right amount of challenge. Each scenario has conditions for gold, silver, and bronze finishes, and even as an experienced player I couldn’t reliably clear the gold conditions on every scenario. I’ll have to keep trying.

Home Cities No Longer Require Levelling Up

In the original Age Of Empires 3, new cards could only be unlocked for your Home City as it leveled up. In the beta I played, all cards were available for use from the very beginning, but cosmetic changes (like adding jugglers to the harbour) still needed to be unlocked. Note that this may be due to the nature of the beta, and if this changes in the full release we will update this page.

Changes To Playable Indigenous Factions

You now build Community Plazas instead of Fire Pits; they function the same (set gatherers to it to get special benefits).

What were referred to as the Iroquois in the first game are now the Haudenosaunee; the former Sioux are now the Lakota. They are otherwise the same, mechanically.

The Haudenosaunee and the Lakota do not gather from mines directly; they must build special buildings (Tribal Marketplace) adjacent to mines to gather coin from.
