It has been 12 years since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was released. Many fans were rightfully concerned about a brand new reimagining of the original that pushed Activision and the Call of Duty franchise to the very precipice of the industry, yet others were likewise excited. Following its October 25 debut, there are a few complaints, mostly surrounding the online multiplayer component and the fact that Spec Ops Survival is a PlayStation exclusive.

One of the many things that 2019’s Modern Warfare gets right, though, is an exceptional storyline that, quite frankly, may now be the very best in the franchise. Sorry, Black Ops, but it looks like your days are numbered.

Dynamically Tactical Gameplay

Modern Warfare takes its militaristic roots to the max in this reimagining, with a variety of updated gameplay mechanics. For starters, weapons can now be mounted onto objects and surfaces, like doorways and rail guards for more tactical precision shooting. Doors can now be either slightly pushed ajar or smashed open, ridding the overused breaching from prior games. Probably one of my personal favorite updates is reloading while aiming down sights, which makes sniping all the more fluid. This level of streamlining has, in effect, made Modern Warfare the most dynamic and tactical shooter on the market.

Players can even hide their weapons, as one mission saw characters sneaking around Russian forces in Urzikstan. That same mission, called “Embedded,” also showcased how this new game supplanted the collectible intel computers from previous titles for more useful components, such as sights and even a silenced P90, which I found in a random sink. Such rewards offered through exploration will be what sets Modern Warfare’s campaign apart from all of the rest.

An Explosively Compelling Linear Narrative

While Kotaku’s Joshua Rivera complains about no real “shock and awe,” Modern Warfare delivers tremendously by superseding expectations. Previous titles evoked that bombastic premise, cinematic flair, and over-the-top action sequences, whereas the reboot evokes much more pathos. The characters aren’t one-dimensional soldiers, but varied individuals with their own backstories and constructs on the events at hand. The fated return of Captain Price is, of course, front and center as the main draw, but the new guest stars are even more of a pleasure. Alex Echo-3-1, Farah Karim, and her brother, Hadir Karim, all add weight to the story in their own way, and while the villains of the story may not be up to par with older entries, players will find the game’s closing segments both promising and worthwhile.

The premise itself is explosive from start to finish, with an opening reminiscent of “No Russian,” wherein the head terrorist, “The Wolf,” rattles on about saving the world before the van stops and a suicide bomber steps out onto a busy London street. From there, the action intensifies to dramatic levels, seeing a blackout home invasion, a US Embassy takeover, and a latter mission played solely as a child. That intense rating summary for the game was no joke. Long-time Modern Warfare fans will also find enjoyment in the final sequences, wherein Captain Price recruits a new task force, called 141, with some familiar faces, in addition to one highly memorable villainous one, as well.

Most Cinematically Realistic Call Of Duty Ever

As USA Today so eloquently puts it, “Modern Warfare ramps up realism so it’s not just all fun and video games.” Whereas previous iterations made use of cinematics in such a way to offer up gamifying realistic shootouts, this new and improved COD simply doesn’t need to. The striking dynamic and tactical gameplay lend credence to the ultra-realistic sounds and graphics. This is the most realistic Call of Duty ever made; it practically feels like one is playing a movie.

Darkness is actually extremely dark, as one of the opening missions sees Alex surveying a Russian warehouse with chemical weapons and the enemies cut the power. With only a tactical flashlight, players must take out targets in near-pitch-black surroundings, which is similar to the exceptional “Clean House” mission, wherein players infiltrate a London townhome with night vision goggles. In addition, this time around explosions and flames appear as lifelike as ever, showcasing the true prowess behind Infinity Ward in developing the most realistic FPS in years.

An Unrivaled And Unforgettable Campaign

Heartfelt, endearing, difficult, realistic and tactical, all of these concepts add up to make this campaign one of the most striking iterations in the Call of Duty franchise. Though some fans canceled their preorders over the Spec Ops exclusivity, they may want to rescind that action due to the game’s single-player narrative. In my own opinion, I feel the new Modern Warfare offers the highest replayability value of any Call of Duty campaign before it. The shooting is utterly fantastic, the graphics are nearly life-like, the sound is utterly mesmerizing, and the overall story itself garnered an emotional attachment I have not felt for a game since The Last of Us.

Though I may not have been as excited for this game as I am for other upcoming releases, I am now extremely anticipating what Modern Warfare 2 offers on next-gen consoles.
