Here’s everything we know about Shazam 2, which is officially called Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Warner Bros. and DC Films released Shazam! in theaters in 2019 and the movie became a rousing success, so much so that it won’t be the last time fans see the original Captain Marvel.

The first Shazam film was directed by David F. Sandberg and starred Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a foster kid who gains magical abilities and who can transform into a superhero. When he says the word “Shazam,” he’s changed into the best version of his future adult self, a tall, muscular hero played by Zachary Levi. The film received strong early critical reviews, and ended up being a hit with fans too, grossing a worldwide total of $366 million.

But what’s next for Shazam and Billy Batson? With Shazam: Fury Of The Gods officially happening, here is everything we know about it so far, what it means for the larger DC Extended Universe, release date, cast, and plot details.

Shazam: Fury Of The Gods Release Date

Everything We Know About Shazam 2

Shazam 2 was originally dated for April 1, 2022, leading to many jokes about it being an April Fools prank. Unfortunately, that release date had to be scrapped thanks to the ongoing pandemic, with the DCEU sequel Shazam: Fury of the Gods now set to release on June 2, 2023. This new release date — changed from November 2022 — puts it six months following Aquaman’s sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Since Shazam 2 is far out enough, it’s likely to be a theater-exclusive film, unlike The Suicide Squad, which received a simultaneous theater and HBO Max release. Filming on Shazam! Fury of the Gods wrapped at the end of August 2021, which leaves plenty of time for the film to get its post-production done before its release in 2023.

Shazam 2 Director & Cast

Everything We Know About Shazam 2

Shazam! Fury of the Gods will reunite most of the original cast and crew of the first film, as director David F. Sandberg was back onboard, along with writer Henry Gayden and producer Peter Safran. Additionally, Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, and the rest of the main Shazam cast — Djimon Hounsou, Meagan Good, Grace Fulton, Ross Butler, D. J. Cotrona — reprised their roles for the sequel. While Levi confirmed that The Rock’s Black Adam won’t be making an appearance in the film, Fury of the Gods has added Rachel Zegler, Helen Mirren as Hespera, and Lucy Liu as Kalypso, the daughters of Atlas, with the latter two definitely causing some trouble. However, Mark Strong is not returning as the villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.

Shazam: Fury Of The Gods Plot Details Are Unconfirmed

While no official plot details for Shazam 2 have been released, it appears Hespera and Kalypso will serve as the sequel’s primary villains. With Dr. Sivana no longer a factor in the sequel, it’s unclear whether Mister Mind, the villainous caterpillar, will be back after an appearance in Shazam’s post-credits scene. Interestingly, Hespera and Kalypso don’t appear in DC Comics, so it’s unclear what role they will play in the film, but they are described as having ill-intentions. It’s possible Zegler’s character, the youngest of Atlas’ daughters, will be going up against her sisters since she’s the only one of the three daughters whose name has not yet been disclosed. Either way, their involvement in the plot explains the title of the sequel, Fury of the Gods.

Shazam Villain Black Adam Is Also Getting His Own Movie

However, the main showdown that many fans are waiting to see – and have been since 2014 – is Shazam battling Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Black Adam. He is a former Champion in his own right and Shazam! actually does quite a bit to lay the groundwork for his eventual introduction. But, when Johnson’s Black Adam does debut, it will be in his own solo movie instead. The Black Adam solo flick has been in the works for a few years now, and it’s finally arriving in theaters on July 29, 2022 after filming wrapped in August 2021.

Black Adam is a spinoff of Shazam!, but, despite being one of the character’s primary antagonists, he won’t be appearing in Fury of the Gods. However, there’s always hope that Black Adam could appear in a sequel to Shazam 2 if all things go well and Levi’s character gets another opportunity to appear onscreen after the second film. Black Adam introduce the character, and it may be better to hold off on a potential throwdown between him and Billy until he can properly master his Shazam powers.
