After a long wait, Splatoon 3 was finally announced at the latest Nintendo Direct. The colorful shooter has developed a large and loyal following, but it’s been over three years since the last entry. Details are a little scarce at the moment, but here’s everything we know about Splatoon 3, including all the release date, gameplay, and story details shown so far.

Splatoon 2 released in 2017, and fans have been hopeful for a sequel ever since. Now, Splatoon 3 has been officially confirmed by Nintendo. Splatoon 3’s reveal trailer showed off the typical Squid Kid action, some interesting weapons, a badlands-esque map, and a new city to explore.

The colorful, action-packed trailer gave fans plenty to be excited about. For anyone who’s been eagerly waiting for Splatoon 3, the wait is almost over. Here’s everything we know so far about Splatoon 3’s release date, gameplay, and story details.

Splatoon 3 Release Date

The release date for Splatoon 3 was given as 2022 during the Nintendo Direct. A more specific release date wasn’t given, but Nintendo said it hoped to share more information about the game before 2021 ends. So, a specific release date may be given before the year’s end.

Splatoon 3 Gameplay & Reveal Trailer

In terms of gameplay, the reveal trailer for Splatoon 3 showed the typical splatter-action associated with the game, as well as the usual 4v4 matches. Squid Kids are shown carrying a variety of weapons, including launchers, cannons, and even bows. The trailer appeared to focus mostly on the multiplayer action, which is understandable given how popular events like Splatfest are, but there’s a good chance Splatoon 3 will have a single-player mode as well, since Splatoon 2 had one.

There will certainly be new maps coming to Splatoon 3, although the trailer mostly focused on the “sun-scorched Splatlands.” A new city, Splatsville, was also shown off. Nintendo also assured fans that new weapons and moves would also be coming to the game when it releases.

Splatoon 3 Story Details

Very little is known about Splatoon 3’s story right now. The trailer’s description on YouTube eludes to the story taking place “in the wake of chaos,” and the Splatlands certainly give off a post-apocalyptic wasteland vibe. After the character creation sequence at the beginning of the trailer, the Squid Kid rides a decrepit train to Splatsville where they quickly join in on the classic four versus four matches.

Splatoon 2 is often considered one of the best games of 2017, so it’ll be interesting to see if Splatoon 3 can live up to expectations. The reveal trailer alone is probably enough to get most fans excited, but everyone will have to wait until later in the year to learn more details regarding Splatoon 3 on the Nintendo Switch.
