Everything We Know About The Cancelled Pokémon Pink

The first generation of Pokémon games was planned to feature another entry at one point in time, but it’s unclear exactly how far along it was in development before Game Freak scrapped it, as it was never formally announced and we only know of its existence due to a datamine from earlier this year. That planned game was Pokémon Pink, and it could have been a companion game to Pokémon Yellow if it was finished.

Pokémon Red & Green were notoriously buggy games, which led to Game Freak releasing an updated entry in the series, called Pokémon Blue. The fourth entry in the first generation was Pokémon Yellow, which was released the following year in Japan. Pokémon Yellow was designed to be closer to the anime, giving the protagonist a Pikachu that followed them around the world map, as well as the three Kanto starters. Team Rocket from the anime also appeared as villains in the game.

In April 2020, the Pokémon Yellow source code leaked online. There weren’t too many revelations regarding Pokémon Yellow within the source code (outside of more digitized sound effects for the Pokémon’s cries), but there was a reference to something that no one had ever heard before within the files of the game – Pokémon Pink.

There are several references to Pocket Monsters Pink in the source code for Pokémon Yellow, and they always group the two games together. It seems that Pokémon Pink and Pokémon Yellow were intended to be released alongside each other like Pokémon Red & Blue, creating a new quasi 1.5 generation.

The theoretical contents of Pokémon Pink are more mysterious. It’s likely that the player would have been given a partner Pokémon that follows them around the map, but their identity is currently unknown. There are two likely candidates for this position, as either Clefairy or Jigglypuff would have fit the role. Clefairy was a major character in the first-ever Pokémon manga series (which pre-dates the anime) and there is a border in the Japan-only Game Boy Camera software that features Clefairy and Pikachu together. Jigglypuff was a recurring character in the anime, which would fit with the theme of Pokémon Yellow. Outside of Clefairy and Jigglypuff, the only other pink Pokémon in the series at that point were Slowpoke, Slowbro, Lickitung, Chansey, and Mew. Porygon might have been chosen if it hadn’t been blamed for the epilepsy scandal the previous year.

One theory regarding Pokémon Pink is that it might have been intended for girls. The Pokémon franchise appeared during an era when toys were marketed towards genders, yet it managed to appeal to all kids. We know that a female player character was planned to appear in Pokémon Red & Green from the start, but technical issues prevented it from happening until Pokémon Crystal. It’s possible that Pokémon Pink would have been aimed at girls and would have starred a girl, which is why it might have been canceled, as the first Pokémon games proved that they didn’t need to go that route in order to appeal to a wider audience.

As of the time of writing, Game Freak hasn’t made any official statement regarding Pokémon Pink. The game was never formally announced and it exists only as a few lines of text in code that was never meant to be seen by fans. Pokémon Yellow would go on to be remade as the two Let’s Go! games, which starred Pikachu and Eevee, rather than Clefairy or Jigglypuff. It’s unlikely that any planned elements from Pokémon Pink made their way into the new games, considering that the developers chose the Rival’s Pokémon to represent one of the titles. There have been a number of Pokémon leaks over the past two years and Game Freak hasn’t released a statement about them, but the day may come when the company reveals more about its plans, and the truth behind Pokémon Pink is revealed.
