Everything You Need To Know About Pokemons Generation 58 Legendaries

Pokemon, over the course of eight generations, has introduced numerous legendary and mythical Pokemon to the mythos and lore of the Pokemon universe. Some of these Pokemon play huge roles in the worldbuilding aspect, while others have more focused purposes that are on a smaller scale. The last four generations of Pokemon games are characterized by flagship legendaries that are incredibly powerful and have a huge impact on the world accompanied by less insane legendaries and mythical Pokemon which balance out the pantheon.

For the uninitiated, there are two types of legendary-like Pokemon. The first is the legendary Pokemon, which as described above, are generally incredibly powerful and govern a sphere of influence. Mythical Pokemon are essentially just legendary Pokemon which are even rarer than legendary Pokemon; this is represented in game by the unobtainable nature of mythical Pokemon. Generally speaking, mythical Pokemon can only be obtained through events, not through normal in game methods.

Additionally, there is a sort of pattern among mythical Pokemon. Most generations have a small, psychic type mythical Pokemon which is incredibly powerful. Examples of this in previous generations would be Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, and the like. Legendary Pokemon are grouped into pairs or trios usually, and the group receives a name based on their overarching purpose.

Generation 5

Swords of Justice (Coballion, Terrakion, and Virizion) and Keldeo

Everything You Need To Know About Pokemons Generation 58 Legendaries

The Swords of Justice, consisting of the Pokemon Coballion, Terrakion, and Virizion, are quadrupedal hooved Pokemon capable of using their antlers as swords. They are very clearly based off of the Three Musketeers, and it is said they are tasked with defending Pokémon’s habitats, ensuring that humans are not able to destroy them. There are even legends of these Pokemon storming human castles in the days of antiquity to protect the habitats of nearby Pokemon. Like the Three Musketeers, there are actually four of them. Keldeo is smaller and weaker, and is considered a mythical Pokemon, but shares traits and desires with the other three.

Forces of Nature (Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus)

Everything You Need To Know About Pokemons Generation 58 Legendaries

Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus are a trio of Pokemon collectively known as the Forces of Nature. They are heavily inspired by Japanese deities, particularly Fujin, Raijin, and Inari, deities of wind, lightning, and fertility respectively. Tornadus and Thunduras constantly clash with each other, which often has catastrophic results. Landorus on the other hand has been credited with interrupting this conflict numerous times, and is worshipped as a peace-keeper, playing a role similar to that of Rayquaza in the weather trio.

Tao Trio (Zekrom, Reshiram, and Kyurem)

Everything You Need To Know About Pokemons Generation 58 Legendaries

The relation between Zekrom and Reshiram represents the timeless concept of Yin and Yang. Together, the two create a perfect balance and are benevolent to all, but separate they pose huge threats. It is believed that Zekrom and Reshiram were both one dragon initially, but were split apart at some point. These two play a huge role in the story of Pokemon Black and White 1 and 2, and have yet another in their midst to further balance them. Kyurem is based off of the less well known concept of wuji, meaning the absence of yin and yang. Kyurem is further able to combine with either Zekrom or Reshiram to create Black Kyurem and White Kyurem.

Victini (Mythical Pokemon)

Everything You Need To Know About Pokemons Generation 58 Legendaries

Victini is a psychic and fire type Pokemon with a unique ability. It is said that any that battles with Victini at their side will always win, as the Pokemon embodies victory itself. Victini is a mythical Pokemon, the first of this half of Pokémon’s history. As with other mythical Pokemon, Victini is diminutive, extremely rare, and unobtainable through normal means. This Pokemon also shares they Psychic type that other mythical Pokemon like Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, and the like have, and has a unique power. Victini is believed to constantly build up power within itself, and is capable of transferring this power to any other Pokemon or person it comes in contact with.

Meloetta and Genesect (Mythical Pokemon)

Meloetta is yet another mythical Pokemon, but differs from the standard archetype to a degree. Meloetta has two forms, Aria Forme and Pirouette Forme; Aria Forme is based off of musicianship, and is normal and psychic type, while Pirouette Forme is based off of dancing and is normal and fighting type. Genesect is also a mythical Pokemon, but breaks even more of the typical rules. Genesect is a fossil Pokemon, resurrected by Team Plasma and cybernetically modified it to be even more deadly than it once was. As mythical Pokemon, both Meloetta and Genesect play minor roles in the story of the games, but have made appearances in the anime.

Generation 6

Aura Trio (Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde)

The Aura Trio was the star of Pokémon’s sixth generation, featuring Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde. Like most trios before this one, the first two Pokemon respresent extremes while the third represents balance. In this case, Xerneas represents life, and is capable of bestowing life to everything around it, while Yveltal embodies destruction, and constantly saps the life force of anything near it. Zygarde is responsible for nature, and ensuring that the vastly different effects caused by these two Pokemon remains in balance. Zygarde’s complete form, achieved by finding all of the Zygarde Cells is believed to far outclass both Xerneas and Yveltal in terms of power.

Hoopa, Diancie, and Volcanion

Everything You Need To Know About Pokemons Generation 58 Legendaries

Generation 6 added three new mythical Pokemon, but Hoopa conforms to the mythical Pokemon standards the best. This is yet another Pokemon with two forms, Confined Forme and Unbound Forme. While Hoopa is in Confined Forme, it is known as the mischief Pokemon and is psychic and ghost type. Once Unbound, Hoopa is known as the Djinn Pokemon, and is psychic and dark. This Pokemon seems to be based off of the wish-granting genie (djinn). That said, rather than granting wishes like Jirachi, Hoopa uses magical golden rings to steal things from across dimensions.

Diancie and Volcanion are the other two mythical Pokemon of generation 6. Diancie is a rock and fairy type Pokemon which can create diamonds on its body at will, and as such, it is sought after by many for its monetary potential. This Pokemon’s goal is to create a Heart Diamond, which is capable of protecting things from Yveltal’s destructive aura, and Diancie is also the only mythical Pokemon capable of mega evolution. Volcanion, on the other hand, is unique as the only fire and water type Pokemon. Volcanion is a very powerful and reclusive Pokemon, and when forced to fight uses superheated water as its main weapon.

Generation 7

Type: Null and Silvally

This Pokemon, like Mewtwo, is a creation of man. Type: Null was considered a failed experiment and locked away until one was discovered by a trainer named Gladion. Gladion befriends the unusual Pokemon and eventually brings out its evolution, which he calls Silvally. This Pokemon is the also one of the few legendary Pokemon capable of evolving, but its peculiar origins brings to question whether it should have legendary status or not.

Guardian Deities (Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, and Tapu Fini)

The guardian deities of Pokemon Sun and Moon are each tasked with guarding a certain island in Alola: Tapu Koko protects Melemele Island, Tapu Lele defends Akala Island, Tapu Bulu guards Ula’ula Island, and Tapu Fini watches over Poni Island. These guardian deities are revered by the inhabitants of Alola, and play a major role in the story of these games. They also each make appearances in the anime as well, and are concerned with the development of Cosmog.

The Light Trio (Solgaleo, Lunala, and Necrozma), Cosmog and Cosmoem

Everything You Need To Know About Pokemons Generation 58 Legendaries

Both Cosmog and Cosmoem are interesting because they are actually the precursors to the main legendary Pokemon of generation seven. Cosmog evolves into Cosmeom, who can then evolve into either Solgaleo or Lunala. Solgaleo and Lunala both represent the sun and moon as one would expect, but their counterpart Necrozma has a different story. Necrozma is assumed to be from a different dimension, where it once was a benevolent being of light, but after receiving a grievous injury, it became warped. Now, it travels across dimensions, seeking to steal light wherever it can to maintain its form. All three Pokemon of this trio have numerous forms.

Magearna and Marshadow

Everything You Need To Know About Pokemons Generation 58 Legendaries

Magearna and Marshadow were the first mythical Pokemon of the seventh generation of Pokemon games, and are both rather odd Pokemon. Magearna is made completely of metal, and is incredibly powerful. Magearna was actually made by a scientist five centuries in the past, but interestingly holds a secret. The metal form Magearna displays is more like a suit of armor, while its true self is its soul-heart, encased deep within the armor. Marshadow is shrouded even further in mystery. All that is known of this strange Pokemon is that it travels through the shadows of others and gains power through this act. Marshadow also has another form, known as Zenith Marshadow, and has a unique Z-crystal.

Zeraora, Meltan, and Melmetal

Everything You Need To Know About Pokemons Generation 58 Legendaries

These were the final mythical Pokemon to be added to generation 7, and in fact the most recent mythical Pokemon to be added at all, as generation 8 has none so far. Zeraora has control over magnetism, and can use that control to levitate, fly, and move at incredible speeds. He also is capable of manipulating electricity with this ability. Meltan and Melmetal absorb metal in order to grow and can combine with one another in order to evolve. Perhaps what is more curious about this Pokemon is that Meltan first debuted promotionally in Pokemon Go, and was eventually officially added in Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee.

Generation 8

Zacian and Zamazenta

Everything You Need To Know About Pokemons Generation 58 Legendaries

Zacian and Zamazenta are the flagship Pokemon of Pokemon Sword and Shield, and are fabled to have protected the Galar region from a calamity known as the Darkest Day. They clearly are based off the concept of a sword and a shield, and play a major role in the game’s story. Furthermore, Zacian actually has two forms, one of which he only maintains while in battle. The two are belived to be sisters and are capable of defeating a dragon known as Eternatus who, although is likely a legendary, lacks that classification.

Kubfu and Urshifu

Everything You Need To Know About Pokemons Generation 58 Legendaries

Finally, this is the first new upcoming legendary which will be available in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield’s upcoming expansions. Naturally, not much is known yet about Kubfu and Urshifu, but the recent Nintendo Direct did share some information. Kubfu will be attainable by the player in the Isle of Armor expansion, and can be evolved into Ushifu. Depending on how the player trains Kubfu, he will evolve into one of two forms. Urshifu’s two forms are a single strike form, which presumably will focus on powerful, singular hits, and a rapid strike form, which may have a lot of multi-hit moves. Regarding design, Urshifu seems to be somewhat loosely based on ninja type characters from Naruto.

Calyrex

The final legendary Pokemon revealed during the Nintendo direct is Calyrex. Calyrex is a grass and psychic type Pokemon and will be a large focus of the upcoming expansion, The Crown Tundra. It is believed that this Pokemon once ruled the Galar region long ago, and its secrets are likely to be important for players to learn. Again, not much is known about this Pokemon given that players will need to learn about it once they get their hands on the expansion. The design revealed for this creature doesn’t seem entirely regal, so it is very possible that it may have some kind of evolution or form change.

These legendary Pokemon played a huge role in the stories of their respective games, and it can be assumed that they new legendary Pokemon, Kubfu, Urshifu, and Calyrex will as well. Although this most recent four generations of Pokemon games are characterized by slightly less powerful legendary Pokemon when compared to generation one through four legendary Pokemon like Arceus, the newer legendary Pokemon tend to focus more on a specific region of influence and are extremely relevant within that region. It will be interesting to see in the future what new legendary and mythical Pokemon are added in upcoming games or possible future expansions.
