Fede Alvarez, director of the Evil Dead reboot, has given a status update on a potential sequel to the 2013 horror film. When it was first announced that Sam Raimi’s iconic comedy-horror film was going to be remade for a new generation, fans of the franchise were divided. This wasn’t because the idea was seen as offensive or sacrilege, rather it was largely due to the fact that Evil Dead fans had been waiting decades for a fourth installment in the series.

Nonetheless, Raimi personally chose Alvarez as the filmmaker with the necessary skills to reboot the classic. Alongside screenwriter Rodo Sayagues, Alvarez delivered an excellent update to the original film, billing it as “the most terrifying film you will ever experience.” While that particular claim is debatable, Evil Dead 2013 certainly has its own brand of horror, something that set it apart from Raimi’s original films. Because of this, many Evil Dead fans couldn’t quite reconcile the film within the overall arc of the first three in the series. Similar in so many aspects, yet different in so many others, Evil Dead 2013 remains a part of the IP that isn’t necessarily a favorite of Evil Dead fans, but many would also very much like to see it return with a sequel. With news of a fourth Evil Dead film now common knowledge among fans, however, a sequel to the reboot seems less likely than ever.

Then again, an Evil Dead 2 isn’t completely out of the question – at least that’s what Alvarez revealed during a recent interview with Comicbook.com. Stating that there is “definitely” a chance for a follow-up to the 2013 film, Alvarez was also careful not to commit too much to the idea, in fear of media taking the notion and running with it. Though the possibility of a sequel is real, it doesn’t sound like it will happen anytime soon. Read what Alvarez said below:

“There is definitely a chance [of a follow-up]. The problem is, we have to stop saying there is a chance, because then there’s a headline the next day, ‘There’s a new movie coming!’ and, no! This is what I can tell [you]: [producer] Rob Tapert and [director] Sam Raimi, we’re like family. We get together once in a while, we had a great experience making that movie, they gave us a career in this business. We always discuss that and there was some discussion very early on about a sequel and we haven’t gotten to write it, we never wrote a script, but we knew where it was gonna go and, at that point, for some reason, it didn’t happen. And now it went [the Evil Dead Rise] route.”

Read from a certain point of view, Alvarez’s comments do sound as though Evil Dead Rise (aka Evil Dead 4) pulled the carpet out from beneath a possible Evil Dead 2. While this likely isn’t quite the case, it’s arguable that most fans of the franchise strongly prefer to see a fourth installment of Evil Dead, even if series star Bruce Campbell isn’t involved beyond a producing role and Raimi isn’t on board to direct.

If Evil Dead 2 should occur within the next few years, it will be interesting to see what sort of direction it goes in. As fans of the original Evil Dead are well aware of, the second film in the series was largely a remake of the first. As a result, whatever direction that a possible Evil Dead 2 decided to go in would mark new ground for the entire series.
