Dark Horse Comics has announced that Grendel will receive a new omnibus edition, collecting the vintage run. Commemorating the titular villain’s 40th anniversary and the upcoming Netflix series adaptation, creator Matt Wagner’s original issues will be reprinted in the new format.
Hunter Rose AKA Grendel has been wreaking havoc in comics since 1982. Created and written by Wagner, the fictional writer Rose lives a double-life as an assassin in New York. Taking on street crime, Grendel is an imposing presence in the city who has fun on the job. The initial run earned the praise of top tier comic book writers like Alan Moore, who called Grendel “a brave and possibly even reckless experiment that has succeeded admirably.” Although he isn’t a household name, Grendel has been compared with many mainstream characters like Deadpool.
Soon, old fans and unfamiliar comic book readers alike will be able to revisit Grendel’s early days in a trade paperback, Grendel Omnibus Volume 1: Hunter Rose. The collection brings fans back to Hunter Rose’s beginnings as the masked killer, with stories by Matt Wagner and other creators including Tim Sale, Mike Allred, Stan Sakai, Guy Davis, Troy Nixey, Darrick Robertson, Jill Thompson, Duncan Fegredo, the Pander Brothers, Michael Avon Oeming, and several others. The first volume follows Hunter as the first man to take on the Grendel persona, making his name known in New York City. The first volume’s newly illustrated cover by Matt Wagner and colorist Brennan Wagner has been released as seen below:
Grendel Omnibus Volume 1: Hunter Rose is set to include Devil by the Deed, and short story collections such as Grendel: Behold the Devil and Black, White & Red along with Red, White, & Black. As creator Matt Wagner reminisced on the antihero’s earlier issues, he said, “When I first created Grendel, I could only dream that the character and concepts would have a life and resonance beyond the initial storyline. Now, forty years into this dark and sprawling saga, I can look back on an epic narrative that’s always provided as many thrills and surprises for me as it hopefully has for its readers.”
The Dark Horse Comics classic title will return to stores just in time for the Netflix series. The first volume of Grendel’s omnibus will be released exclusively in comic book shops on June 8, 2022 and in bookstores on June 21. Grendel Omnibus Volume 1: Hunter Rose is currently available for preorder online, priced at $29.99.
