The 4th Season of Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid will conclude its run with one of Power Rangers’ most recognizable villains. Rounding out the current season of the title is Rita Repulsa, the very first villain of the franchise and one of its more enduring figures. Rita Repulsa joins the Season Pass as one of Power Rangers’ earliest representatives on the roster, following after their newest representative Poisandra. As the first antagonist of the franchise, Rita Repulsa adds a sense of legacy to the roster with her inclusion.

Rita Repulsa’s late introduction to the game brings with it a sense of completion to the representatives of the franchise’s first season as Repulsa joins Goldar, Scorpina, and her husband Lord Zedd. In doing so, Repulsa’s moveset also sets itself apart from the aforementioned trio by providing a more ranged and zoning-based style of gameplay, complementing their close-to-mid range combat with her long-range attacks and pressure.

Repulsa brings a moveset focused completely on zoning opponents out in a manner befitting the woman known as the Mistress of Magic. Repulsa’s close-range offense also lends itself to her tendency toward magic and keeping distance, finding ways to zone out her target and create distance or knock them out of reach. With the tools in her arsenal, Repulsa’s reputation in the magical arts is on full display with a mixture of zoning and keepaway abilities to control the space between her and her opponents.

Rita Repulsa’s Moveset in Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid

While Poisandra’s moveset focused on lockdown, Rita Repulsa is strictly focused on keepaway and playing at long range. Despite that focus, Repulsa’s target combos give her a solid offensive presence up close with an emphasis on either stunning or knocking her opponent’s back. Her Light Target Combo stuns her opponent while the Heavy Target Combos sends them flying across the screen in order to set up her keepaway game in earnest. The Heavy Target Combo can also be comboed into her Medium Target Combo, which can be cancelled into her special techniques such as her ability to summon her Putties, the various minions under her command.

Putties can be summoned to either attack across the screen from mid and far range or quickly cancel from her Medium Target Combo, cutting Repulsa’s recovery time while offering more options for a follow-up. With the aid of assists, Repulsa’s Putty summons can keep pressure on a foe from across the screen at mid-range or with the M.Bison-inspired Putty Crusher that sends a putty flying straight forward. This is aided by moves like Pinwheel Chaos, which allows Repulsa to summon an electric orb across the screen or at an angle to prevent an aerial offensive and even carry an opponent toward Repulsa to bring them in for a follow-up combo. Repulsa’s ability to control spacing also extends to her mobility tools.

Chaos Spark causes Repulsa to step backwards and use her wand to cover her retreat with a spell that deflects projectiles. As a follow-up, she can then cast Royal Candle to summon a pillar of purple energy to discourage an opponent from giving pursuit. Repulsa can also guide her descent from a jump with Queen’s Ambit, allowing her to more directly control where she lands from an aerial situation and giving her the ability to land herself away from her opponent and resume any keepaway gameplan she had in mind. While in the air, Repulsa can use Wicked Circuit to strike from above as an off-the-ground combo extender from a jump, giving her aerial mobility a tool to catch an opponent that’s chasing.

Rita Repulsa’s EX and Super Moves in Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid

At the cost of meter, Repulsa’s EX move, Repulsa Blast, sends a series of electric pillars traveling through the ground to the opponent, launching them upwards on hit. This move destroys incoming projectiles while also acting as an OTG, lifting an opponent from the ground upon impact. In execution and usage, the move is similar to Magneto’s own Magnetic Shockwave Hyper Combo from the Marvel vs. Capcom series, showcasing the continual influence of Capcom’s crossover fighter in nWay’s own title. In keeping with the spirit of her magical focus, Repulsa borrows another MvC-inspired technique.

Taking a cue from Dormammu’s Dark Dimension in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Rita Repulsa’s Super opens a portal directly under the body of the opponent, ensnaring them if they’re not airborne or blocking at the moment of activation. With it, Repulsa sends her foe to what can be described as a dance party of putties, the putties pulling the foe into their world until Repulsa forcibly brings them back, the damage having already been done. The threat of this Super move happening from anywhere on screen acts as an active deterrent against careless attempts at zoning against Repulsa while also granting Repulsa a satisfying and easy-to-use combo ender that will even hit as an OTG.

Rita Repulsa’s repertoire of moves draws plenty of inspiration from her source material’s known expertise in magic while also expanding upon it beyond the original Power Rangers series has shown. The magic in her arsenal and general gameplan make her a clear component to the plans of her fellow Mighty Morphin villains, filling a gap by being a long-range keepaway character as the others continue their assault from a closer distance, making her an invaluable addition to any team’s gameplan.

Rita Repulsa rounds out the cast of Season 4, giving the roster a touch of completion that it seemed to be lacking previously. With Power Rangers’ first antagonist now fully represented, the roster now more accurately feels like a celebration of the legacy of the franchise in many ways. With a long-standing history that has endured nearly two decades and a detailed, well thought-out game plan to fill the niche lacking in the movesets of her allies, Rita Repulsa enters the grid as perhaps the perfect character to end the current season of the game’s life. It will be time for Rita Repulsa to conquer earth once again in Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid when she launches on December 14.
