Amplifier Game Invest, a team that works in finding and investing in game development startups, has announced the creation of a new game studio, Goose Byte. This new company, which will be based out of Montreal, will be headed by ex-Ubisoft developers Theodor “Theo” Diea and Nathan Ross Powell.

While Amplifier will fund the company and provide development support, Diea and Powell will drive the creative vision of the company as creative director and principal game developer. These two veterans of the industry seem like a good match to head up the new studio, with each having experience in creating and producing games.

Initially joining Ubisoft as an internal communications coordinator, Theodor Diea continued to take on different roles at the publisher including development tester for Ghost Recon Future Soldier, as well as key roles in marketing, live operations, and producing. Throughout his games career, Diea has shipped games on console, PC and mobile, ranging from triple-A, casual, and indie titles.

“Goose Byte is meant to be a bold breath of fresh air for developers in a city that is simply burgeoning with game development talent”, said Diea. “We’re building a studio around the concepts of trust, respect, inclusivity, sustainability, and a healthy dose of ambition. The core values of Amplifier Game Invest makes them an obvious pick when looking for a partner to build this studio. We’re thrilled to begin this journey with them”.

Meanwhile, Nathan Powell began his games career as a programmer for Eutechynx. From there he joined Codemasters before being nabbed by Ubisoft Montreal to help with the Watch Dogs IP. After pioneering the tech that powered Watch Dogs’ multiplayer, he continued working on the series with engine systems for Watch Dogs 2, and also aiding in Watch Dogs: Legion. With six successful projects under his belt, Powell is hoping his gaming knowledge will help create a studio that is the very best of what developers can be: “With the financial support and collaborative mindset of Amplifier Game Invest, we’re free to pursue a truly unique vision that is sure to delight and inspire our players around the world. We can’t wait to share more”.

Overall, the new studio will design and build games based on their own IPs, targeting PC and console platforms. By placing an initial emphasis on innovations in UX, networking, and social elements, Goose Byte hopes to expand existing genres to wider audiences. Hopefully, being situated in one of the main hubs of the global game development community will help the studio attract the talent required to make it work.
