EZ Desk Carbon Edition Review StandUp

Despite hearing from plenty of others about how great standing desks are, I’ve been permanently seated for the past few years – I’m committed to future back pain, I guess. So when the opportunity came up to take a look at the EZ Desk Carbon Edition, I figured it was my time to see what everyone was standing up about.

One minor issue I had with the EZ Desk is that setting it up was quite a task. Although the online instructions were a lot easier to follow, the manual that comes with it left a room filled with curses and confused looks at screws.

Hindsight shows that I should have gone with the video from the start, but it’s worth noting that it took around two hours to piece together, although your mileage may vary depending on how good with this sort of thing you are – spoilers, I am not.

This brings me to one of the key draws of the EZ Desk – it can be swapped from a standing desk to a sitting with one button press. As the name implies, it’s a simple function that I had a lot of fun annoying my colleagues with during Zoom meetings for the first few days of use.

Beyond being annoying for everyone else in the room for a while, after a week of intermittently switching the desk to a standing mode every couple of hours, I can’t imagine going back. As someone who always works from home, I’m constantly sitting behind a desk and rarely give myself a break to stretch.

With the option to stand being introduced to the mix, I no longer felt the burn from sitting down all day and felt more flexible as a result. I’m not sure if standing does much for my concentration, but it’s undeniably a benefit for posture, which is more important in the long term. I’m behind the curve here, but there is a noticeable difference between crouching at a desk all day and being able to stand and stretch out without losing any progress.

Although the maximum height of 119cm is more than enough, I do wish you were able to put the desk just a little bit lower down. The lowest it will go is 74cm, which will be fine for most people, but considering my use of a curved chair, I did find myself leaning forward a bit at times. I’m a fairly average-sized person at five foot ten, so I can imagine it being a bigger issue for those who’ve actually consumed fruit and veg in their lifetime.

Although being able to swap between sitting and standing is the main appeal of the EZ Desk, it’s not the only thing that it does well. At 140cmx60cm it’s big enough to easily fit several monitors, whilst also allowing for room on the sides for things like mouses and fun desk trinkets. I tend to have a lot of silly things on my desk to fiddle with and help concentrate with throughout the day and I never had a room with space.

Another one of the EZ Desk’s strengths is its simplicity. Once you’ve got past the setup, you’re essentially completely sorted. Beyond some appreciated smaller attachments like a small faux-leather mouse pad or the cup and headset holders, the EZ Desk doesn’t have too many bells and whistles to distract you. Everything is EZ.

For some people, the lack of RGB lighting or a full desk mat is going to be a negative, but it has more than enough features for its price, and some of the more intuitive things come with the motor, such as memory settings and a sit-stand reminder timer. This desk goes all-in on that element, and that works for it.

Another strength of the EZ Desk is its price. With a sale putting it at £219 down from £299, it’s an affordable choice for anyone looking to upgrade from a basic desk, or for those wanting to give standing desks a try.

My only real issue with the EZ Desk is its colour. Although carbon black is a great neutral colour that looks sleek and can easily suit most rooms, it does have some notable drawbacks. Fingerprints, smudges, and dust all show up on the desk easily, even from someone who keeps things neat. It’s the same issue for the small desk mat, which is just as attractive to dust.

The benefit of such a neutral colour outweighs this, but if you’re not a fan of maintaining something and keeping it clean, you might want to go for another colour. Luckily, there are other options available.

The main draws of the EZ Desk are its simplicity and standing functions, and those are two things it excels in. It doesn’t have many bells and whistles outside of that and can be a vacuum for fingerprints, but it’s still a stylish, affordable desk that is a great pick for anyone on the fence about the difference standing can make.
