F9 actor JD Pardo has discussed his “amazing” experience working on the Twilight movie Breaking Dawn – Part 2. The latest installment of the Fast and Furious saga was released in June and featured returning stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Sung Kang, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris, and Tyrese Gibson. Former WWE star John Cena made his debut in the franchise as Jakob Toretto, Dom and Mia’s estranged brother. The film follows Dom and his crew on another dangerous international mission, this time pitted against a new villain: Jakob.
Pardo appeared in F9 as Jack Toretto, the late father of Dom, Jakob and Mia. The flashback sequence featuring Pardo’s Jack recalls the moment that the character tragically passed away during a racing event. In an intense scene, Jack battles against his racing rival before he is forced into the retaining wall. The impact causes a fiery explosion that claims his life right before his children’s eyes. While Pardo’s screen time was limited to this single scene, it also provided one of the most critical and memorable moments in the film, similar to his acting role in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.
Twilight’s supernatural teen love story might not sound too enthralling for an actor who has also featured in F9 and the Rush Hour TV series, but Pardo still looks upon his time filming the movie fondly. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant promoting the director’s cut of F9, Pardo discussed what it was like to be on the Twilight set. The actor said he had an “amazing time” working with the likes of Michael Sheen, who played the Volturi leader, admitting to being a huge fan of the legendary actor. He also described the incredible cold he felt on the vast warehouse set dressed in his character Nahuel’s simple loincloth, with no shirt to match. Read Pardo’s full comments below:
Exclusive: “I had an amazing time on that because I got to act with Michael Sheen, who I’m just a huge fan of. And then Bill Condon was the director and it was massive. We shot in this massive, almost football stadium, warehouse and it was all green screen. So, your imagination has to be there. And there’s a huge crane coming down and it was so cold and they put me in a loincloth and I could feel the air coming right up. And I was like, ugh. I felt bad for the ladies. I always… You know. You’re so cold. I was so cold.”
The Twilight movies were based on Stephanie Meyer’s best selling novels exploring the romance between a vampire, Edward, and a human, Bella. Pardo’s character is revealed in the final film in the franchise as the only known vampire-human hybrid. While his appearance is brief in terms of screen time, he plays a key part in sparing the life of Bella’s child, and his scenes testifying before Aro and the rest of the Volturi allowed Pardo to act alongside Sheen. The movie’s climax hinges around Pardo’s character, who is ultimately able to prevent a vampire civil war from occurring.
Pardo’s career is generally defined by intense action scenes, but unfortunately, while Breaking Dawn does feature an imaginative combat sequence, Pardo doesn’t get to participate. Nonetheless, just like in F9, his brief appearance proves to be a crucial part of the narrative, without which the ending would be entirely different. And while Pardo missed out on the big action moments in this film, working with one’s idols in a massive franchise like Twilight (while wearing a loincloth in freezing temperatures) is certainly a memory worth having.
