The PC and mobile CCG and board game hybrid Faeria is finally making its way onto select consoles next month. Coming out a few years ago in 2017, this mixture of tactical card based action and dynamic board game mechanics has undergone many changes over the years. Boasting over 100 hours of solo content, along with co-operative missions and puzzles, Faeria also supports its very own esports scene. Their tournaments promise exciting prizes for both the players, and everyone who watches online.

On August 13th, Faeria is finally making its way to the Xbox One and Switch. Now costing $24.99, the game was originally a free to play title before transitioning to a more traditional paid model. This allowed them to remove micro-transactions and simply allow players to purchase the game and DLCs for a set price without exploiting their players or jeopardizing the game’s balance. Additional cards are all earned through playing through any of the game’s modes. Those who purchase the Switch version will also get a special gift from the developers. Purchasing the game on that platform will automatically upgrade players to the Premium Edition, which includes some of the game’s DLC for free.

While it may not be the biggest name in the CCG landscape, Faeria does offer a unique twist with its ability for players to change the board as they play. The Switch is a natural home for these types of games, as has been seen with other games like Slay The Spire doing quite well there. While this announcement also included the Xbox One, the PS4 is a noticeable omission. The game is still supposed to launch on that platform as well, but unlike the other two has not been given a date beyond 2020.

Competitive and co-operative card games, especially smaller ones like Faeria, need as wide of a player base as they can get if they want to remain relevant. The shift from free to play to a traditional paid model is a little concerning on the surface, and will cut down on how many of these new potential players will give it a chance, but at least removes the dreaded micro-transaction tactics that ruin too many potentially good titles.
