Vault Boy from Bethesda’s Fallout franchise has been added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Mii Gunner character skin. This information comes alongside the reveal ARMS’ Min Min as another new fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Nintendo’s latest entry in its popular fighting franchise released in 2018, sporting the largest roster in the series’ history – a roster that continues growing over time.

In Fallout, Vault Boy is the iconic, cartoon poster child displayed on posters and vault equipment, such as the Pip-Boy screens, around the franchise’s underground vaults, sporting blond hair and a boyish smile. The Fallout franchise has six main entries, most of which have been celebrated by fans, except for Fallout 76. In every entry, however, Vault Boy has been a consistent recurring implementation.

Now, in a Twitter post, Nintendo has revealed the mingling of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the Fallout universe with the inclusion of Vault Boy as a Mii Gunner costume. Gamers will be able to play as Vault Boy starting June 30, 2020. The announcement came with a short video featuring Mario exploding after stealing Vault Boy’s thumbs-up pose in Fallout-style black-and-white cinematography.

Fans have commented on the announcement with a wide mix of reactions. Some have expressed their disappointment with the addition, uttering “Actual garbage” as one of their response. Others, however, have mostly commented on what the costume should have been as opposed to Vault Boy. Some have wondered if anyone else has noticed Mario dying for the third time in a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate video. One fan said, “Wow the best Fallout content to come out in years is a Mii costume.”

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate offers the most diverse roster in the franchise’s history in terms of fighting styles and animations. The game is also one of the most valuable in terms of content when it comes to game modes, ranging from the massive campaign to the innovative Spirit Challenges and online multiplayer. The game has featured crossovers – the entire foundation of the franchise – from the time of its inception, including characters from Star Fox, Super Mario, Street Fighter, Mega Man, and now moving on to Fallout. The four-year gap between the recent title and its predecessors – on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U – felt like a lengthy one, but the sheer size of the game made the wait worth it, especially when one considers it wasn’t as lengthy as the wait between Super Smash Bros. Brawl and the 3DS and Wii U installments.
