Gamers aren’t best pleased over Infinity Ward’s decision to remove the popular ‘Realism” multiplayer mode from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

It’s quite safe to state that the new game has been a huge hit among fans, more so where it’s predecessor Black Ops 4 is concerned. But the devs appear to have shot themselves in the foot following their new update.

The studio released the 1.06 patch for the game this week, adding “NVG” as a new playlist. This makes it so that the polarizing nighttime maps come back to the game after they were removed on launch day without explanation.

The maps have returned, just like Infinity Ward vowed they would, but fans aren’t happy due to the fact that the update has also removed the Realism playlist. Playing in this mode leaves you without an HUD and hands you standard health, which in turn makes you susceptible to dying from a single headshot.

Infinity Ward has dropped the Realism properties into NVG, which means that players keen on hardcore multiplayer are forced to seek it via the night maps. This has divided the opinion among gamers, some of which have headed to the r/modernwarfare subreddit and the official CoD forums.

This is all a bit odd, though. Realism mode was one of the reasons Modern Warfare had been getting as many plaudits and was said to be one of the most enjoyable playlists in the multiplayer realm. Admittedly, other hardcore modes can provide an experience that’s close enough but it’s certainly not the same.

It’s unclear as to whether or not the playlist will return to the game. But if it doesn’t players will have to settle for nighttime maps.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, following its release on October 25. The title racked up over $600 million in under a week and continues to dominate the charts as it heads toward its first month.
