Steven Universe fans aren’t happy with the character’s representation in MultiVersus, thanks to his different voice actor, out-of-character lines, and strange translation to 3D.

After months of speculation, Warner Bros. has finally confirmed that MultiVersus is a real thing, revealing that it’s going to be released in 2022, will be free-to-play, and will have a ton of characters across several Warner Bros. properties. One such series is Steven Universe, which is being represented by Garnet and Steven himself.

Although this should be cause for celebration amongst Steven Universe fans, there are a lot of them who aren’t happy with how the character is being represented in the game.

One big reason for this is that Zach Callison isn’t returning to voice the character, which is most likely due to him taking a break from voice acting for his mental health. When the new actor, Daniel DiVenere, was announced the comments underneath the post were flooded with “not my Steven” and images of Pearl saying “that’s not my baby”.

Another issue comes from the voice lines that Steven says during the trailer, which seem out of character for him. Some Twitter users have particular issues with “friendship power”, with one Twitter user saying, “Please give this guy better lines to say than “Friendship Power!!!” in response to the voice actor change. Ian Jones-Quartey, supervising director on Steven Universe, also noticed the out-of-place line, saying, “Idk if I would have picked pre-timeskip Steven or let him say stuff like “Friendship Power!” though lol”.

The complaints don’t stop at the voice acting and lines though, as Steven’s transition to 3D hasn’t been the most positively received, with some asking “WHY DOES HE LOOK SO DIFFERENT” after seeing in-game footage of him. It’s especially strange when Garnet looks spot-on to the show.

When MultiVersus was originally leaked, it looked like Steven was going to be using his design from Steven Universe Future, instead of from the first few seasons of the show. Fans have noticed this, with one fan pointing out that, “steven universe is the only character in multiversus who’s model and render COMPLETELY changed”.
