The Mario franchise has always been bustling with urban legends, from the mystery surrounding Mario and Luigi’s last name, to baffling shortcuts hidden within Mario Kart. One myth has now been uncovered, as fans have finally found Luigi’s existence within Super Mario 64.
During Nintendo’s “gigaleak”, the source code of Super Mario 64 was released and Luigi’s model was sitting within the contents waiting to come alive. Modders took it upon themselves to unveil the brother that never was in Mario 64, by taking apart the development files and stitching together a fully-formed Luigi.
A tweet from ‘FrangusMcDangus’ received over 35,000 likes that showed the gradual transformation of Luigi, from code to green plumber. The humorous clip, created from 4chan posts, is a fascinating watch with priceless fan reactions. Many gamers couldn’t believe that the myth of Luigi’s existence was finally becoming a reality, as 25 years of speculation turned out to be true. Some fans also believed they stumbled upon some unused voice clips of Luigi that sounded similar to the character’s voice.
As the model of Luigi grew from textured mustaches to a final, 3D rendered image of Mario’s taller brother, witnesses of the development joked about its consequences. Some prophesied that unstoppable forces would be released if Luigi took full form, others struggled to contain their excitement as he came to life, limb by limb. Users even threatened that Nintendo would disapprove of their creation, despite the development files being deliberately released to the public in the first place.
Luigi’s absence from Super Mario 64 has been debated amongst gamers since Shigeru Miyamoto revealed in an interview that Luigi was originally intended to make an appearance. Miyamoto disclosed in the 1996 interview, featured in the game’s strategy guide, that Luigi was removed from the game due to “memory issues.” The creator of Mario continued to explain how Nintendo was going to include Luigi in a Mario Bros. inspired minigame, but decided against this notion.
It’s been a long hunt for Mario’s long lost brother, ever since “L is real 2401” was engraved on the Eternal Star statue in Super Mario 64’s Castle Courtyard. This discovery will no doubt inspire gamers to continue the search for other surprises that lie within the gigaleak, as they try to debunk the next Nintendo urban legend.
