Far Cry 6 is a daunting experience, presenting players with a sprawling open world to explore in the form of Yara. This island paradise is filled with dense cities, gorgeous jungles, and all manner of locations to uncover, filled with enemies to kill and loot to claim. There’s a lot to learn on your journey of revolution, and a number of things you’ll be all the better for learning about before jumping into the shoes of Dani Rojas.

To make the adventure go that much smoother, we’ve compiled five essential tips for Far Cry 6 that are perfect for beginners jumping into Yara for the very first time. Read on for tips, tricks, and pieces of advice that might seem obvious, but are absolutely worth considering.

Never be afraid to mix up your playstyle

It can be awfully tempting to play games like this as an aggressive soldier filled to the brim with firepower, or as a silent ninja who murders all of their enemies with a silenced pistol from the shadows. Both of these approaches are perfectly valid, but Far Cry 6 is infinitely more fun when you play fast and loose with all of its mechanics.

Stealth in Far Cry 6 isn’t the most advanced. You are essentially required to pull off perfect headshots and stick to the shadows if you want to avoid being spotted, all while shooting security cameras and disabling alarms to ensure nobody is able to call for reinforcements.

In larger outposts and checkpoints this can become a bit of a chore, but luckily there are so few consequences to being caught and going loud. The worst you can do is meet an untimely death and try again, which is a worthy sacrifice when it comes to experimenting with everything this game has to offer. Use different weapons, cause a ruckus, and relish in the chaos that comes with being a guerilla fighter. Just don’t be stuck in your ways.

The workbench is your best friend

Workbenches are everywhere in Far Cry 6, acting as the perfect place to customise your weapons, supremos, and other equipment with valuable attachments and mods. The game’s opening hours will bring you to the workbench time and time again to teach you the importance of kitting out your weapons and ensuring they’re capable of carrying a revolution.

I’d recommend taking these lessons to heart, because the game is so much stronger for them. Whenever you come into possession of a new weapon or find yourself purchasing a supremo, take some time to visit the workbench and take a look at all of the potential mods and attachments available.

Faster reload speeds, more accurate handling, and general buffs to your character like greater health regeneration and additional equipment can make Far Cry 6 so much more enjoyable to play, and can easily be missed if you aren’t paying enough attention. However you will need a number of resources to purchase these upgrades.

Don’t forget about vehicles

It can be tempting to run around the world on foot and ignore the idea of summoning vehicles and adding them to your repertoire – but Far Cry 6 makes this so much easier to manage than before. Instead of finding random ones in the open world, with a touch of a button you can now summon a curated vehicle of your liking complete with unique cosmetics, weapons, and other trimmings in a matter of moments.

Whenever you enter a horse, car, bike, or plane the game will remind you to find a pick-up point, which allows you to store the vehicle for unlimited use from outposts, hub areas, and other places you’ve taken back from Anton Castillo. I guess you could always fast travel, but that takes the fun out of discovering things naturally across the open world.

Recruit Amigos

Amigos are the cute animal companions that Ubisoft have spent months marketing Far Cry 6 with – and they’re a fun mechanic well worth seeking out once you’re set loose in the open world. Some are unlocked as part of the narrative campaign, but others must be sought out as a part of side missions and optional quests that can be easy to miss.

Guapo and Chorizo are hilarious little animals that can have a huge impact on gameplay. The former can tear foes to pieces while the latter is perfect at distracting foes so you can sneak by them or stab them in the back. While you could easily avoid summoning them altogether and get by with silenced pistols and explosives, it’s far more fun to experiment and have some fun with all of the game’s mechanics. Get wild with your amigos.

Spend some time in hub areas

The game’s first major hub area isn’t unlocked until you’re a few hours into the game – switching the player perspective to third-person as you explore a large environment filled with allies to converse with, missions to take on, and cool things to unlock. These change as you progress through the campaign, so it’s always worth checking back on a regular basis to take on quests and ensure you don’t fall behind.

There’s cockfighting to partake in, facilities to build that provide additional items and buffs, and Yaran stories to embark on that add a bit of extra depth to certain locations and characters. While Far Cry 6 is stuck in the past in many ways, this is one way where Ubisoft has taken a step forward to try something different, and with any luck they’ll continue to expand upon it with future games.
