Today we lose a casual gaming icon, as FarmVille is officially closing its doors. After 11 years on the market, Zynga has finally decided to move on from the aging title and focus on its many spin-off titles.

Oddly enough, FarmVille isn’t shutting down because of a dwindling player base. Rather, it’s going away because Adobe Flash is no longer supported by browsers and Facebook. Instead of trying to rebuild the aging game with a new platform, the team has decide it’s best to close it down. If you’re worried you won’t have anywhere else to go for your casual farming kick, fear not – Zynga has three different FarmVille games you can access on your phone or through the internet. These include FarmVille 2, FarmVille 2: Country Escape, and FarmVille 2: Tropic Escape.

The rest of Zynga’s catalog should remain intact, as they weren’t developed with Adobe Flash.

The best news to come out of the shutdown? Zynga’s claim that FarmVille 3 is “coming soon.” There’s no indication as to when that will be, but hopefully more information will be released sometime in 2021.

FarmVille quickly became a cultural phenomenon, pulling in more than 32 million players at the height of its popularity. Recruiting friends to be your neighbors was a normal thing to do in 2009, and showing off your sprawling farm was a badge of honor. Much of what made FarmVille special lives on in its successors, although the market is now fraught with competition.

And, although Zynga’s other titles remain incredibly popular, we’re not likely to see another FarmVille-like craze any time soon. Social media was still in its infancy during the early years of FarmVille, and the synergy between the two propelled it to incredible heights. Now, with several different games and social media sites vying for players’ attention, it’s less likely we’ll see something as ubiquitous as FarmVille for quite some time.

Zynga answered several questions about the shutdown on its official website – be sure to give it a read if you’re curious to learn more about the decision.
