Original writer Gary Scott Thompsons says that the Fast & Furious franchise is likely to keep going beyond the announced F10 and F11. F9, the tenth film in the Fast & Furious franchise (counting Hobbs & Shaw), premiered in theaters on June 25 and sped to the #2 slot in the worldwide box office for the year. The franchise is showing no signs of slowing down, even after the tragic death of original star Paul Walker before the release of Furious 7 in 2015.

The upcoming F10 and F11 are designed to be two halves of a single “final chapter,” concluding the storyline of the long-running franchise that began in 2001. They are expected to star returning cast members Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Tyrese Gibson, though their co-star Dwayne Johnson has said he will not be returning to the series. F10 and F11 are being directed by Justin Lin, who directed Fast & Furious entries 3 through 6 before returning for F9.

When speaking with Movieweb about his TV series Las Vegas, original The Fast and the Furious screenwriter Gary Scott Thompson spoke about the potential future of the franchise. He took the mercenary perspective, saying that “they will write it until it dies” if the franchise keeps making money. He explains that the films are expensive to make, but as long as they’re raking in the box office and allowing Universal to compete with the moneymaking juggernaut of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they won’t be tempted to close the racetrack anytime soon. I don’t think they see the ending that I saw, but I don’t think they see an ending either. It’s making too much money. Universal Execs have said, “Thank you for creating our Marvel Universe”. They are competing with Marvel. It’s like the only movies getting made out of our studios lately are Marvel, Disney, Fast & Furious, or D.C. Comics. These films cost a lot of money so they want to make a lot of money. They will write it until it dies.

Although specific plans for the Fast & Furious franchise haven’t been confirmed beyond the next two films, the stars have ideas for their own continuations. Vin Diesel has joked about making a musical entry, and recently Jordana Brewster proposed an all-female spin-off starring the women of the Fast & Furious universe. The universe is so expansive at this point that this idea could cover everyone from longtime franchise stars like Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez to the iconic actresses who have joined more recently, including Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron.

Thompson is most likely correct about the fate of Fast & Furious. The box office of this franchise is diesel in the engine of Universal, and they have already proven that they can separate individual characters from the group with Hobbs & Shaw, which was the #11 movie worldwide in 2019. F10 and F11 might indeed be the end of the current group as fans know it, but it will be easy for them to draw in more stars to keep the legacy going, much in the same way that the MCU is redrafting its Avengers lineup after the departure of some of its major cast.
