Han’s story arc in the Fast & Furious franchise is anything by linear due to The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift’s place in the timeline. Sung Kang portrayed Han in four movies, in addition to the short film Los Bandoleros. Despite his presumed death in Furious 7, Han will make his welcomed return in the franchise’s upcoming sequel, F9. Though details regarding Han’s reunion with Dominic Toretto and the crew is still under wraps, it’s safe to say a few twists will be involved. Looking back at his story thus far, anything is really possible.
Tokyo Drift originally served as the franchise’s third installment, marking Han’s first appearance. Before Fast & Furious, Kang’s character was originated through Justin Lin’s Better Luck Tomorrow. Han then mentored Tokyo Drift’s central character, Sean Boswell, and taught him the necessary skills needed to compete in the local drifting community. Unfortunately, Han had ties to some shady figures connected to the Yakuza. And while being chased by enemies through the streets of the city, Han was T-boned and seemingly killed after his car exploded.
Though Han was thought to be dead, he appeared in Los Bandoleros to join Dom’s crew in the Dominican Republic. As a viable partner in crime, Han was seen helping Dom hijack fuel tankers in 2009’s Fast & Furious before rejoining the team in Fast Five to assist in the heist to steal $100 million from a corrupt businessman. Going by the alias Han Seoul-Oh, he fell in love with fellow crew member Gisele Yashar, and they both volunteered to help the group take down a dangerous mercenary organization led by Owen Shaw in Fast & Furious 6. It turned out that the short film, as well as the three subsequent sequels, took place prior to the events of Tokyo Drift, allowing for Han’s presence.
Tokyo Drift’s Setting Was Retconned To Expand Han’s Story
Tokyo Drift premiered in 2006, but following the timeline shift made by the Fast & Furious sequels, the setting of Han’s first film was retconned to 2014. By retroactively changing the timeline, Fast & Furious 6 was able to lead into Tokyo Drift by explaining why Han returned to Japan. It also filled in the gaps regarding Han’s “I have money” line since he recently obtained millions from the Fast Five heist. Han’s presumed death from Tokyo Drift was shown again in the Fast & Furious 6 mid-credits scene, providing insight into Deckard Shaw’s involvement as a lead-in to the drama of Furious 7.
Han remained absent for the seventh film as well as 2017’s The Fate of the Furious. By this point, the movies took a modern-day setting approach so it was still only a few years after Han was thought to be dead. Now that he’s confirmed to be alive and well, the Fast & Furious franchise will need to give Han true justice while explaining his absence. F9 will attempt to fill in the blanks in Han’s already murky timeline, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the movies make a few more retcons before coming to a close.
