Fans of The Walking Dead universe, and particularly, the spin-off series Fear the Walking Dead, were delighted when it was confirmed that a fan-favorite character from the earlier seasons, Madison Clark, would be returning to the show. Rumors of her still being alive have been discussed since the character was presumably killed off in the mid-season finale of the fourth season. Since her actual death was never shown, fans believed – or at least hoped – that Madison was still alive.

Now, it has officially been confirmed that Kim Dickens will reprise her role with new season 7 episodes in 2022. So, the discussions have shifted from Madison’s mortal status to how she will make her valiant return, what she has been up to this whole time, and what she will do. From a CRM kidnapping to the end of Charlie, there are tons of interesting theories.

She Was Captured By The CRM

One theory, posited by Redditor Bubba-OG in the r/FearTheWalkingDead thread by u/stehpen6686 suggests a possible Civic Republic Military tie-in to explain her disappearance for so long. “I wonder if they will go for the CRM capture angle,” they ask.

It would explain why Madison would have been gone for so long without ever being reunited with her old friends and, most importantly, her daughter Alicia. If she was at the CRM unable to escape or even working as a soldier, it could also tie back to the upcoming Walking Dead movies.

She Is Padre, Or Is There

In the same thread, BreakingBaddly goes one step further to suggest that maybe Madison is Padre, or at least the leader of the place that has become known as Padre. “She simply IS Padre,” they write.

It would make sense that after the group goes searching for a safe haven they all believe is the answer to their desperate prayers that it would be Madison who was behind it all. This would also prevent the storyline from becoming a copycat of The Walking Dead and its “Terminus” storyline, which turned out to be a place that was opposite of what was promised and one of the worst communities on The Walking Dead.

Her Re-Intro Will Be Via A Flashback Episode

Continuing with the main discussion thread, Redditor SRVisGod24 comments that Madison’s flashback episode will be “nuts,” assuming that there will be a flashback episode to introduce the character back to the series, showing what she has been up to the entire time.

Indeed, the show has used flashbacks many times to help fans visualize where different people from the group are at different times in their lives. And fans will want to know not only what Madison is doing now but how she got to that point.

She Kills Charlie

Fans have some dark theories about Madison’s return marking the death of Charlie, one of the least likable characters on Fear the Walking Dead. In one of the most heartbreaking deaths from Fear the Walking Dead, Charlie shot Nick. So, it would make sense that if Madison discovered who was responsible for the death of her son, she wouldn’t think twice before killing them. Several Redditors discuss this as an option.

Redditor Oriopax, in particular, has come up with a detailed theory that involves Morgan getting bit, turning, and getting shot right before he bites Alicia, followed by Charlie being shot with some choice words from the mysterious shooter: “this is for Nick, you little b****.” The hooded shooter is then revealed to be Madison.

She Had Been Looking For Them

Given the timeline, which some believe would make Madison’s absence about two years, many think it’s completely plausible that Madison has been looking for them this whole time and was simply unable to find them.

“The group has moved several times, hundreds of miles away from Austin,” notes Redditor o1pickleboy in the same thread. The tank town was close to Dallas and Lawton was in Oklahoma, so Madison could have been scouring the Round Rock area for ages only to come up empty when trying to find any sign of them.

She Will Stop The Fight Between Strand And Alicia

The season 7 midseason finale ended with a bang, with Alicia declaring war against Strand. This set things up for a big fight between the two former allies and friends, with neither willing to bend to the other.

Redditor HungryJaguar suspects Madison will enter at the height of this discord and be the one to “stop the conflict between Strand and Alicia.” She will arrive right in the nick of time to convince them to end it before one, or both, of them gets killed and the tower as a safe haven for innocent people is ruined.

She Found An Abandoned Cabin

It would, in a way, sweetly pay homage to a departed character, John Dorie, the most heartbreaking death in season 6 of Fear the Walking Dead, if Madison was simply living out her days alone in an abandoned cabin this entire time. It would be just as John had been doing before meeting with the group.

After the stadium, she might have been in a state of shock and depression, and simply didn’t have the will to go out and search for her family, believing they were better off without her. “[She] probably found an abandoned cabin,” writes Redditor TyYoshi, “to recollect her thoughts on what the h*** happened to her stadium.” Two years could easily have gone by as she tried to pick herself back up again and go searching for her family.

Alicia Will Die Just As She Returns

While many fans are hoping for a beautiful mother-daughter reunion, and Alicia is a popular character fans wish had more screen time on Fear the Walking Dead, others suspect that Madison’s return will come just as Alicia meets her end. In the mid-season finale of season 7, Alicia had been bit and though she chopped off her arm, she might have waited too long to do it and the infection had already spread. Thus, she appears to be dying slowly as the infection takes over her body.

Redditor FutureMartian97 thinks that Madison’s return, whenever it might be in the episode, will mark Alicia’s demise. “You know damn well Alicia is going to die right as Madison shows up,” they opine. Fans hope that at least the two get at least a short reunion before Alicia potentially perishes.
