Fear TWDs Morgan vs Strand Who Will Win (& Who Should Win)

Fear The Walking Dead season 7 is a battleground between two huge personalities – Morgan Jones vs Victor Strand – but who will (and more importantly who should) emerge victorious? One of the few characters still standing from Fear The Walking Dead season 1, Colman Domingo’s Victor Strand has changed his morals more than his clothes in the zombie apocalypse. A charismatic chameleon, Strand can be anything from a self-centered con artist to a brash and bold hero, depending on his mood, but after repeatedly failing to be a good man, Fear The Walking Dead season 7 finds Strand at his most despicable.

Since Teddy instigated a nuclear strike on half of Texas, Morgan has been struggling by in a submarine with Grace and Mo, doing his best to protect those he cares about. Strand, meanwhile, has adopted the guise of an old Confederacy general and declared himself chief of an independent haven, which he calls The Tower. But this is Victor Strand, so obviously The Tower hasn’t a democratic principle in sight, and the leader takes full advantage of his available luxuries. Knowing Victor’s true nature, Morgan ominously warns Strand that should his savior complex end up hurting people, the pair are going to have a problem.

Inevitably, much of Fear The Walking Dead season 7 will chronicle Morgan vs Strand fighting over who gets to lead the few remaining survivors through Teddy’s nuclear wasteland. Fear The Walking Dead simply isn’t big enough for the both of them, but will Morgan kill Strand, or will Strand kill Morgan?

Fear TWDs Morgan vs Strand Who Will Win (& Who Should Win)

Fear The Walking Dead’s ongoing Morgan vs Strand feud isn’t just about last season’s submarine incident – there’s an underlying magnetic force pushing their opposing ideologies apart.

From Morgan’s perspective, the conflict is straightforward. Morgan kills Strand only if a violent course of action becomes absolutely necessary to protect other survivors. When Morgan issues his first (and only) warning to Strand in Fear The Walking Dead season 7’s “Cindy Hawkins,” he does so free from resentment or a psychological need for revenge. Morgan knows Strand well, and has encountered many others like Strand over the course of The Walking Dead’s decade-long timeline. Having already watched Victor side with Ginny for an easier life, threaten to invade the dam community over a quarrel, and then leave him for dead on Teddy’s submarine, Morgan (understandably!) believes Strand isn’t a man to be trusted. The idea of Victor building his own community doesn’t sit well with Lennie James’ Fear The Walking Dead protagonist.

When Strand declares his intention to rebuild the world, Morgan magnanimously replies, “I hope you do.” This verbal olive branch confirms Morgan isn’t out for vengeance, and will happily give his old enemy another chance. Even in Fear The Walking Dead season 7, episode 2, upon discovering Victor had actually survived the nuclear blast, Morgan’s reaction was one of slightly annoyed exasperation, rather than burning rage.

While Morgan vs. Strand isn’t personal for the former, the same can’t be said for the latter. Fear The Walking Dead season 7 finds Strand desperately trying to assert himself – to Alicia, to Morgan, to anyone that’ll listen. Strand seems determined to prove his way is the right way because – in his warped philosophy – this justifies his ruthless actions. Strand couldn’t maintain the virtuous man Alicia wanted him to be; his only option now is to prove villainy keeps people alive better than heroism, and Alicia was wrong all along.

Morgan Jones is Strand’s biggest obstacle on the road to that egotistical destination. Morgan is essentially the man Strand could have been if he followed Alicia’s advice – selfless, kind, and helpful. Were Morgan allowed to gather Fear The Walking Dead’s survivors once again, he’d undermine Strand’s rule, and prove a leader needn’t be a dictator to succeed. Fearful of this outcome, Fear The Walking Dead season 7 could see Strand kill Morgan to remove his biggest threat – both as a rival, and as a mirror Victor does not wish to look at.

Morgan Vs Strand: Who Will Likely Win?

Fear TWDs Morgan vs Strand Who Will Win (& Who Should Win)

The destined Morgan vs Strand clash will be a close call, but the more likely outcome for Fear The Walking Dead season 7 is that Morgan kills Strand. This is mostly down to the hero’s strengths compared to his opponent’s weaknesses.

Being self-centered and self-sufficient are very much not the same thing. Throughout Fear The Walking Dead, Victor Strand has survived by putting his own safety above everyone else’s, and as a former conman, this is something Strand is very proficient at. In past seasons, Strand’s modus operandi manifested as attaching himself to larger groups – manipulating Nick Clark and joining the safety of Madison’s inner circle in Fear The Walking Dead season 1, or throwing his lot in with Ginny’s Pioneers at the conclusion of season 5. In other situations, Strand has exploited those around him instead. Whether tossing Morgan to a pack of undead or enjoying the literal fruits of The Tower’s labor, Victor Strand always ensures there’s someone else to take the fall… like Will in Fear The Walking Dead’s season 7 premiere.

Morgan, by contrast, is self-sufficient. Equally comfortable surviving alone as in a group, Morgan’s feats across both The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead speak for themselves. He terrorized Wolves and Saviors alike at Alexandria, before switching shows and bringing down Ginny’s operation almost single-handed while barely recovered from a gunshot wound. Where Victor Strand has always been just a little bit pampered, Morgan Jones is double-tough, and if he decides to take Strand down a peg, a horde of zombies around The Tower’s perimeter and some throwaway goons aren’t going to keep Victor safe from his boogeyman.

But the real reason Fear The Walking Dead season 7 could see Morgan kill Strand is that Morgan Jones knows all of his opponent’s tricks, whereas Victor Strand is becoming increasingly arrogant. Morgan knows Strand exploits others for gain, and in a one-on-one fight, The Tower’s chief stands no hope of victory. Morgan can use this knowledge to isolate Strand and create an opening, which wouldn’t be too hard considering how easily Victor gets riled up. By the same ticket, a life of luxury in The Tower is giving Strand a misplaced feeling of invincibility – something that can only lead to his eventual downfall.

Morgan Vs Strand: Who Should Win?

Not only is Morgan Jones the odds-on favorite in Fear The Walking Dead’s Morgan vs Strand battle – he’s also the character who should win. Victor Strand currently sits at the darkest ebb of his 7-season arc; a dastardly and unpredictable narcissist fueled by insecurity. Victor is content to kill anyone who dares offend him, and revels in deciding who gets the privilege of joining his kingdom. Even so, glimmers of “good guy Victor” still shine through. In Fear The Walking Dead’s season 7 premiere, Strand vulnerably admitted to Will that his real reason for seeking out Alicia was to prove himself worthy, because her opinion matters. Strand ultimately chooses to shut those feelings out and double down on his villainy, but his confession proves some virtue remains in Victor’s heart.

This small lingering hope paves the way for Victor Strand’s eventual redemption in Fear The Walking Dead season 7 – but that can’t happen if Strand kills Morgan and picks up the post-apocalyptic win. Beating Morgan would cement Strand’s belief that putting himself first is the best path to take, and would quash any possibility of Colman Domingo’s character redeeming himself. There’d be no reconciliation with Alicia, and no payoff for all the times Fear The Walking Dead hinted toward Strand’s capacity to be better.

For Fear The Walking Dead season 7 to complete Victor Strand’s redemption arc, he must first receive a humbling from Morgan Jones. Right now, Strand is only strong because of how the people of The Tower follow him blindly. If Morgan is able to show those people a more democratic way forward, Strand might find the backs he walks over no longer offered so willingly. Once this happens, Strand will be left a broken, shivering wreck facing his wrongdoing head-on. Only then can Victor Strand build himself back up as a Fear The Walking Dead protagonist.
