Square Enix has revealed Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier’s release date, as well as the mobile battle royale game’s opening cutscene. The announcement of FF7 The First Soldier earlier this year came as a bit of a surprise, as it’s not only a battle royale – a first for both Final Fantasy and Square Enix – but it’s also the first spinoff game in Final Fantasy VII Remake’s alternate storyline.
As a FF7 Remake prequel, Final Fantasy 7 The First Soldier puts players into the shoes of one of Shinra’s first elite SOLDIER members. Players will be able to choose between several classes in FF7 The First Soldier and fight with a mix of melee attacks, magic, and firearms in matches of up to 75 players. Apart from enemy players, The First Soldier gameplay will also include a variety of monsters players can defeat to gain experience, allowing them to power up their skills and increase their maximum health. Also like the main RPG series, Gil players pick up during a match can be used to purchase and upgrade items.
The official Final Fantasy 7 The First Soldier Twitter account announced the game will launch worldwide on both iOS and Android on November 17. Square Enix also released FF7 The First Soldier’s opening movie. The cutscene starts off with footage of FF7 Remake before quickly rewinding back to the events of The First Soldier, which is set 30 years prior. The animated footage starts in 1977 and shows who can be assumed to be a younger President Shinra, as well as the beginning of what is called “Project: 0.” The video jumps through several key events involving the development of the SOLDIER Project in the FF7 Remake timeline until it reaches the year 1989, when The First Soldier actually takes place.
On Google Play and the App Store, FF7 First Soldier pre-registrations are already open, and Square Enix is giving out rewards to players based on how many sign up for the game early in total. The rewards include a Chocobo Egg and several character and vehicle cosmetics. As of this writing, three out of the five pre-registration milestones have been reached, with only the one-million and two-million milestones still left to achieve. However, with the game now set to launch in less than two weeks, would-be registrants don’t have a whole lot of time left to earn those final two rewards.
Apart from revealing the release date, the opening movie of FF7 The First Soldier also shows that the game’s events occur over a span of 12 years, teasing that the game’s story may more ambitious than most battle royales and include plot elements that tie into Final Fantasy 7 Remake and its upcoming sequel. If that’s the case, fans of the ongoing remake project are going to want to at least check out the upcoming game for how it adds to the series’ narrative.
