“In From the Cold” is a main story quest from Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker. It is found simply by getting to level 83 and progressing through every other story mission. However, it stands out because players will need to use stealth, find allies, and explore an area without obvious waymarkers.

The “In From the Cold” quest makes use of the Final Fantasy XIV Roleplay system, which allows players to temporarily control another character. This is not a new feature for players who completed Stormblood and Shadowbringers fully, without the use of a skip potion. Those players will already be familiar playing as characters like Alphinaud, Hein, Thancred, and Y’shtola.

Like in other Roleplay battles in FFXIV, the player’s hotbar will be temporarily adjusted for the encounter. Because actions will be placed in an arbitrary order, it can make certain interfaces feel awkward. There will be only a few seconds for players to make any UI changes. To avoid issues, players should be comfortable with their HUD, keybinds, and peripherals before accepting the quest. If they fail the mission, players should consider adjusting the difficulty to an easier setting.

The Unknown Soldier in Final Fantasy XIV

During the “In From the Cold” FFXIV Endwalker quest, all players will take control of the Unknown Imperial soldier, who always fights similarly to a basic Gladiator. Players who have never touched the class may be a bit confused. For others, the skills should seem somewhat familiar. The Unknown Imperial Soldier can use the following skills:

  • Fast Blade: 200 potency weapon skill.
  • Riot Blade: 170 potency weapon skill; increases to 300 potency when used after Fast Blade.
  • Rage of Halone: 100 potency weapon skill; increases to 330 potency when used after Riot Blade.
  • Fight or Flight: Increases damage dealt by 25% for 25 seconds; 60-second cooldown.
  • Rampart: Reduces damage taken by 10% for 20 seconds; 90-second cooldown.

Players should use both Fight or Flight and Rampart whenever they are available. There isn’t much use holding on to them for later encounters. If the Unknown Imperial Soldier takes damage, they will automatically restore a small amount of HP over time.

Players will have 35 minutes to complete everything within the “In From the Cold” quest in FFXIV Endwalker. First, they should kill the lone Tempered Imperial and loot them for the new ability to self-heal. It will be placed on the Duty Action Button instead of the hotbar. For the most part, players should try to avoid other combat encounters at this stage and instead sneak to the following locations for interactions:

  • Wounded Imperial (x:23.5, y:16.2)
  • Immobilized Magitek Reaper (x:23.9, y:16.9)
  • Fuel Concealing Wreckage (x:27.3, y:13.5)

After completing these encounters, players will mount the Magitek Reaper. Its weapon systems still function but it is otherwise immobile. Players should use its area-of-effect attacks to dispatch any approaching imperials and defend the citizens. Any rescued citizen will assist in the fight, but, to stay safe, players should let them tank enemies and only attack the enemies that are aggroed. The citizens will also be important for reducing damage from any stack mechanics.

Part of the way through the final encounter, a Corrupted Imperial will self-destruct. The only way to survive is to hide behind the citizen riding their own Magitek Reaper. While the Unknown Imperial will still be alive, they will be in a dying state. An Active Time Maneuver will now start, and players must endure it for three minutes; the 35-minute quest timer will pause during this sequence. Finally, players should crawl back to Camp Broken Glass to complete “In From the Cold” and continue with Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker.
