FIFA 21 Has Absolutely No Cross-Play, Not Even Between PS5 & PS4

FIFA 21 will not support any form of cross-play, including between current gen and next-gen consoles, and only limited progress will carry over.

With the release of FIFA 21 a few months away, the game’s official twitter account has confirmed that it will have no cross-play, including between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Considering that EA has already said its American football title, Madden 21, will not support Smart Delivery, this news does not come as a complete surprise. Still, cross-platform play and backward compatibility have been hot topics for both the upcoming Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5, so the tweet is sure to disappoint some players.

The latter part of the year is usually when sports franchises release their yearly titles to keep up with the beginning of their respective real-world seasons. With that time coming so close to the release of the next generation of consoles, players have to debate if they will purchase their favorite sport simulators for their current hardware, wait months to get the next-gen versions, or purchase both. Each of these options comes with some cons, such as progress not carrying over or not being able to play with friends with different versions of the game. Early indicators, such as 2K’s upcoming NBA 2K21, point towards next-gen games allowing certain progress to carry over, but not all of it.

Now, another early sign of things to come is next-gen titles not always being compatible with their current-gen counterparts, as well as still not being cross-platform. The official FIFA Direct Communication Twitter account was asked how progression and cross-platform play will work in FIFA 21, and its answer is sure to be disappointing to many fans. According to the EA account, FIFA 21 will feature no cross-play and only FIFA Ultimate Team progress is confirmed to carry over between generations.

You won’t be able to play across console generations or cross-play in #FIFA21. However, you will be able to carry over your FUT progression from PS4 to PS5 and Xbox 1 to Xbox Series X. https://t.co/mUqU3zcAud

The answer neatly tells players almost all they wanted to know and, as expected, there is a fair amount of disappointment in the replies. After years of vocal outcry regarding the continuous neglect of the series’ career mode, FIFA 21 will feature a slew of changes to the mode (some brand new, some returning from previous entries), and EA was sure to advertise these new additions, showing that they were listening. However, it now seems that players who enjoy the game’s career mode will not be allowed to transfer saves between different versions of FIFA 21 should they purchase the game twice. EA is taking a similar approach to NBA 2K21, for which 2K let players know that their MyTeam progress (the NBA 2K version of FIFA’s Ultimate Team) would be transferable, but leaving out mention of other modes.

As the popularity of cross-platform functionality continues to rise, players will still not be able to play FIFA 21 with friends on other consoles. Perhaps the technological jump from PS4 to PS5 is great enough to justify why the two versions will be incompatible, but that would not explain why cross-play between Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 versions is still not feasible. There are plenty of other titles that have this feature included, like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, so naturally players are confused about why the option will not be available. Hopefully, a lack of cross-play doesn’t become the standard going forward.
