For two decades and counting, Final Fantasy 10 has been wowing JRPG fans with its sympathetic cast and unforgettable twists. It’s a classic among classics, a must-play for every gamer in search of the greats. While the battles you’ll come across in the main story are seldom truly tough, there’s a ton of challenge to be found along the sidelines.

Some of that challenge pertains to the Dark Aeons, a set of optional super-bosses that take Final Fantasy 10’s beautiful summon creatures and turn them into nightmares. Defeating them is no small task and downing Penance, an aerial enemy that only appears after you’ve bested every one of them is among the loftiest achievements in Final Fantasy canon. We have complete coverage of Penance and the Dark Aeons here.

Who is Nemesis in Final Fantasy 10?

But there’s another chain of quests, with a different diabolically difficult monster. A monster named Nemesis. In fact, Tidus and friends will go head-to-head with some rough tumblers along the way to Nemesis, and the system for unlocking the big bad can be painfully obtuse. Even after all these years, folks understandably stumble, get frustrated, and leave the Monster Arena sidequest behind, never knowing what it’s like to topple Nemesis.

Don’t give up. Navigating the Monster Arena sidequest to battle Nemesis is fairly simple so long as you keep this guide handy along the way.

How to Open the Monster Arena

The stage must be set before the road to Nemesis can even begin. That stage is the Monster Arena, and in order to convince the owner to grant you access to it the following conditions must be met:

  • You must reach the Calm Lands in the main story. This occurs a fair chunk of the way into the game.
  • Once you can explore the Calm Lands, travel to their easternmost area, where you’ll meet the Monster Arena’s owner. He sells weapons for each party member with the “Capture” ability built into them. Purchase these for characters with the highest Strength stat, as in order to successfully capture a fiend, a character with the requisite weapon must deal the final blow.
  • The owner then asks you to capture one of every fiend in the Calm Lands. The full list is as follows: Skoll, Nebiros, Flam Flan, Shred, Anacondaur, Ogre, Coeurl, Chimera Brain, and Malboro.

Not only will accomplishing this task open the Monster Arena, but you’ll also receive Yuna’s Celestial Weapon, Nirvana. Head here for a complete guide to Celestial Weapons, including the locations of the Sigils and Crests required to power them up.

How To Unlock Nemesis in the Final Fantasy 10 Monster Arena

Opening the Monster Arena is just the first step. Familiarize yourself with the three different types of optional bosses that the Monster Arena owner will provide: Area Conquests, Species Conquests, and Original Creations. Each category involves capturing fiends. Unlocking Nemesis involves defeating every other optional boss at the Arena, so here’s how to earn the chance to challenge each one.

Area Conquests

Area Conquests are simple if time-consuming, little adventures. Each boss becomes available once you’ve captured just one of every fiend in a given area. Bear in mind, however, that it’s not a bad idea to catch three, four, even five or ten, depending on the necessary number listed under Species Conquests. This saves time once you’ve moved on from Area Conquests and you’re ready for the species-related sub-bosses

Species Conquests

Note the number of fiends necessary for each new sub-boss; this is why it’s good practice to grab however many of a given species you’re going to need for this category while you’re touring Spira from place to place for the Area Conquests.

Original Creations

This is it. These are the baddest of the bad, the hardest battles that the Monster Arena has to offer. And they include Nemesis. As you’ll see, it’s imperative that you tackle all the sub-bosses from Area and Species Conquests, as well as the tougher nuts to crack listed here.

How to Defeat Nemesis

All that hard work is about to pay off. Defeating Nemesis is one of Final Fantasy 10’s great accomplishments, but to do so, your party’s stats will need to be significant enough that their Sphere Grids are either close to max or — ideally — completely maxed-out. This doesn’t just include each character’s specific segment, but the entire Grid, with every blank slot fitted with a stat-enhancing Sphere.

Of course, the odds are good that you’ve already reached this postgame zenith if you’ve been chasing the Dark Aeons across Spira or even the other Original Creations here at the Monster Arena.

Nemesis possesses a whopping 10,000,000 HP. Ten million’s a big number, but chipping away at it while keeping your squad alive is far from impossible with the right approach. For starters, having Break HP Limit is an enormous boon that will allow the party to reach as much as 99,999 HP. Combined with the rock-solid Defense and Magic Defense stats mandatory to have made it this far, the team can slimly survive a great number of Nemesis’ otherwise-dooming attacks so long as there’s a dedicated healer at all times.

That healer needs to ensure the active party members have Auto-Life cast upon them constantly, because no matter who you have with you, they will drop dead on a recurring basis. Similarly, summoning Aeons to serve as shields for the disastrous damage Nemesis can inflict with attacks like Armageddon and Ultra Spark will save you a colossal headache. Striking Nemesis with your own strongest attacks, such as Tidus’ Blitz Ace (and liberal usage of Quick Hit) and Wakka’s Attack Reels, will slowly but steadily take this titan down.

In honor of your first time wrecking Nemesis, you will receive the “Overcoming the Nemesis” trophy/achievement… as well as respect and admiration from many of your gaming peers.
