Final Fantasy XIV’s latest update — Echoes of a Falling Star — doesn’t go live until February 18th, but in the meantime Square Enix has released a bunch of new screenshots for us to enjoy. These include images from a new questline titled Save the Queen: Blades of Gunnhildr and the battle against Ruby Weapon, Ramuh, Garuda, and Ifrit during the Eden’s Verse raid.

Players have a lot to look forward to next week when update 5.2 is released. Echoes of a Falling Star will bring job updates — including a PvE buff for Red Mages and a nerf for Summoners — new raids, new rewards, and a ridiculous amount of new quests and story material. One of the biggest additions in 5.2 is the Eden’s Verse raid and the character Gaia, designed by famous Final Fantasy developer Tetsuya Nomura.

Outside of combat, Echoes of a Falling Star will include an update to the crafting system, more content for the Ishgardian Restoration, and Ocean Fishing. This content is exclusive to Fishers and will let players hop aboard a ship to fish out on the open ocean. Players will receive experience and scrips depending on which fish are caught, and all passengers aboard the ship have the chance of landing a “big haul” if specific conditions are met. The entire list of new content is impressive — check out the official press release for the full details.

The new screenshots depict the bosses players will face in the Eden’s Verse raid, as well as a glimpse into the story of Save the Queen: Blades of Gunnhildr. Patch 5.2 also has an official trailer, which can be viewed below.

Final Fantasy XIV was released in 2010 to an overwhelming negative response. Square Enix took the feedback to heart and later released Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Unlike the original version of the game — which A Realm Reborn ended up replacing — it was an immediate critical success. As of 2019, Final Fantasy XIV had over 18 million registered players, a feat that seemed unthinkable back in 2010.

With Echoes of a Falling Star on the horizon, things don’t seem to be slowing down for the popular MMORPG. Final Fantasy XIV’s next big update will go live on February 18th.
