The producer of Final Fantasy 16 has revealed that the game will be “quite action-oriented,” but it will feature a mode for people who just want to experience the story. Final Fantasy 16 was revealed during the PS5 showcase of September 2020.

The Final Fantasy series has gradually shifted into an action-RPG format. The first ten mainline entries in the series were turn-based JRPGs, which allowed them to have impressive visuals for their eras. The series started dabbling with action-RPG gameplay with Final Fantasy 11, and it slowly became the standard gameplay format for the series. As a recent example, the action-packed gameplay of FF7 Remake is more akin to the Kingdom Hearts series than the actual game it’s adapting as a remake.

It seems that the next game in the Final Fantasy series will have more of a focus on action than the fans realized. Producer Naoki Yoshida discussed the game during a radio appearance described by Gamestalk (translated by Gematsu), and he mentioned that Final Fantasy 16 will be an action-oriented game. The trailer for Final Fantasy 16 has shown protagonist Clive Rosfield fighting in a similar manner to Noctis from Final Fantasy 15, as he teleports around the battlefield and strikes enemies before vanishing. It’s not surprising that Final Fantasy 16 is an action RPG, but the fans who hoped for a return to the style of the older games in the series might be disappointed by this news.

Yoshida also revealed that the new entry will feature a gameplay mode that is designed for people who just want to experience Final Fantasy 16’s story. This means that people who aren’t fans of action games can still make their way through the game with ease. Going on this, it’s likely that Final Fantasy 16 will have a casual mode of sorts that makes it almost impossible to die, possibly thanks to near-bottomless health or enemy strength being drastically reduced.

Final Fantasy fans were excited to learn that Yoshida was involved with Final Fantasy 16’s development, as he is often credited with bringing Final Fantasy 14 back from the brink and turning it into one of the most popular MMOs of all time. Final Fantasy 14 is often lauded for its ongoing story, which is set to conclude (in its current form) in the upcoming Endwalker expansion. The gameplay of Final Fantasy 16 that has been revealed so far looks like a natural evolution of the style from FF15, and Square Enix has shown off some incredible-looking battles. However, the story is what many people are excited for, and it seems that everyone will have a chance to experience it without running into difficulty roadblocks when Final Fantasy 16 finally arrives.
