Accompanied by Krypto the Superdog, Kara Zor-El will spend her twenty-first birthday drinking in an alien tavern, where a chauvanistic alien gives her a chance to prove she’s so much more than just her powers.

In the wake of the Infinite Frontier era reestablishing continuity across the DC Universe, Supergirl will be taking her leave of Earth in order to celebrate he twenty-first birthday in style, going on an intergalactic road trip with a young alien girl name Ruthye in order to bring justice to the man who killed her father; the villainous Kingsagent Krem of the Yellow Hills. Solicits have shown the 8-issue miniseries will see Kara Zor-El and crew ride a cosmic bus across the universe seeking justice.

When her musclebound hire attempts to steal the priceless sword she was offering in payment, striking Ruthye in the process, who should be drowning her sorrows in the same tavern but Kara Zor-El? Supergirl is in the midst of a quarter-life crisis brought on by continuously living in the shadow of her famous cousin, Superman. Writer Tom King has made a name for himself penning adventure yarns elevated by damaged heroes with believable concerns, and the information available so far (including covers for the first three issues, below) suggests the series is gunning for a sci-fi, psychedelic, fantasy-western mash-up. King previously worked on Superman: Up in the Sky with artist Andy Kubert – likewise a story about a Kryptonian hero leaving Earth on a whistle-stop tour of new challenges, and one which accentuated the emotional toll that Superman’s heroism takes on him as an individual. It seems Supergirl will start the story already at a low ebb, but fans shouldn’t be surprised when the creative team find new ways to put her through the wringer.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, promises to be a rejuvenation of the character, now one of the faces of DC Comics thanks to the popular CW television program Supergirl starring Melissa Benoist. While her role in the mainstream DC continuity has been lacking in prestige of late, an action-packed, gritty, yet fantastical interstellar romp might just be the ticket back to stardom, especially with an all-star creative team at the helm. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1 goes on sale June 15.
