Against all odds, Sonic the Hedgehog’s movie is actually getting good reviews. Not rave reviews, mind you, but it’s being billed as a solid family film worth seeing. This is definitely not how most video game movies go, as you can read about in our previous coverage on the matter.

But Sonic seems to have bucked the trend, and we think that might be because it’s a Sega game. So here are five more Sega games that might make money at the box office. If any Disney execs want to reach out and have us write a screenplay, we’re available.

Ecco The Dolphin

Perhaps the most recognizable of all Sega Genesis Games, Ecco’s story would be right at home in today’s climate change-conscious audience. It would even give a great excuse to blame climate change on evil aliens rather than our own hubris.

There are a few directions we can take the movie version of Ecco. The game itself started out fun and cheerful, but it quickly turned into survival/horror territory. You’re constantly thrown against predators trying to eat you in underwater ruins with no clear path to the surface. This means you’re also slowly drowning the entire time. You also have no effective means of defense as your echo-location system doesn’t so much as discourage predators as it does mildly annoy them.

On the other hand, Ecco really lends itself to a cute cartoon story (a la Finding Dory) of a lost dolphin who’s just trying to find his family. We can really see this going either way.

Altered Beast

If Game of Thrones, The Witcher on Netflix, and the ongoing D&D craze has proven anything, it’s that people love dark fantasy. It doesn’t get much darker than Altered Beast, a frustratingly difficult platformer where you turn into a werewolf to save Zeus’s daughter from an evil demonic sorcerer.

Altered Beast would have been a difficult movie to produce a few decades ago, but modern CG can make the transformation sequences way better than the game. The story basically writes itself, too. The only thing left is who will play the titular Beast. We’re going to suggest Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for both is acting acumen, his prior performance in a video game film series (Jumanji), and the fact he’s !@$-ing huge.

World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck

Of all the games on this list, this one is probably the most likely to be made into a movie. After all, Disney already owns everything else, right?

What made World of Illusion so great was how you were never more than 5 minutes away from a complete change in atmosphere. You start off in a fantastical forest filled with mushrooms and fairies, and then you dive down a gem-filled mine before appearing in a cloud-filled sky where a cumulus formation doubles as a giant airborne piano.

The pace at which you’d swap one colorful environment for the next was breakneck but always followed a logical progression. Well, until you wound up in a dessert-filled world after being shrunken down to a tiny mouse and duck on a pre-war era office desk.

There’s not much of a plot to the game: Mickey and Donald fall into a weird portal that transports them to the World of Illusion where they eventually defeat Pete, the evil sorcerer. But who cares! Movies don’t need plots these days. Just watch any Quentin Tarantino film.

Streets Of Rage

If you want to make a bad action film filled with well-choreographed fight scenes, then you could do worse than Streets of Rage. A malevolent criminal organization called The Syndicate takes over some nameless city causing absolute anarchy. A trio (or quartet, depending on the game) of heroes emerge to fight the bad guys and restore order to The City, eventually saving the day.

The first game makes a lot of sense as all the characters are former cops, but subsequent entries in the series have far more interesting personalities, such as Max the ex pro-wrestler or Roo the fighting kangaroo. Neither of them really says much, but they’re both weird and therefore cool.

It’s also possible to turn this into an ‘80s-style buddy cop film, but with more kung fu. Either way, Streets of Rage is a movie we want to see.

Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition

Yes, Jurassic Park is already a very successful movie franchise that spans 6 films, but you know what they’ve never done in Jurassic Park? Given the protagonist a machine gun.

That’s what made Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition so great. Finally, Dr. Grant has the firepower to take out both a tyrannosaurus rex and a pack of velociraptors and still have enough ammunition to off a bunch of evil InGen henchmen while he’s at it. Rather than a survival/horror game, Rampage Edition turns Jurassic Park into an action game, and that’s what it will do to the film franchise.

But best of all, the movie version of Rampage Edition can tell the story of how an escaped velociraptor eventually meets up with an armed-to-the-teeth Dr. Grant to form the greatest evil scientist-hunting tag team of all time.
