Chip and Joanna Gaines have become a power couple due to their show Fixer Upper, and fans are curious about their relationship timeline. The couple instantly became a household name shortly after the renovation show premiered on HGTV. From 2013 to 2018, Fixer Upper was the number one cable series. The couple took some time after the show ended to focus on their family but made a return to the TV world with two new shows (including Fixer Upper) on their very own Magnolia network. The couple has developed a strong fan base since then.

The Gaineses first met shortly after they graduated from Baylor University. Chip graduated in 1998 and Joanna graduated in 2000. However, they didn’t cross paths until later in an auto shop. Joanna’s father owned an auto shop and employed his post-grad daughter to help in the marketing department of his business. While working in the shop, Joanna was able to land her first TV role starring in the store’s commercials. Future husband Chip walked in the store one day to get his car fixed and stumbled on a photo of then 23-year-old Joanna hanging on the wall. Chip admitted he knew Joanna was going to be “the one” before they even met. In an interview with Pop Sugar, he said, “I knew I’d marry her one day just by the picture on the wall.” Chip became a regular in the shop in hopes of meeting Joanna. It wasn’t until 2001 when Chip stopped by the business to get his brakes worked on for the umpteenth time and was finally able to meet her. They met in the waiting area and hit it off immediately. Chip was able to land the first date with his future wife by complimenting her on her car commercials.

The Fixer Upper stars were married in 2003 in Waco, Texas, after dating for a little over one year. Shortly after their wedding, the newlyweds joined forces professionally. With Chip’s renovating skills and Joanna’s eye for interior design, the couple worked to become the powerhouse renovation team they are known as today. Within a month of their wedding, the couple began flipping houses together and then shifted their focus to renovations. In her Instagram post, Joanna took a trip down memory lane and shared with fans the couple’s first house was a fixer-upper. Joanna admitted that she cried when she first saw the run-down 800 square-foot home but fell in love with it after they renovated it. The couple has 5 kids together, ranging from the ages of 3 to 17.

The HGTV stars have worked to turn their flagship store, Magnolia Market, into a full lifestyle brand. Magnolia Market was opened in October 2003 in Waco for $5,000. In an Instagram post, Joanna expressed how grateful she was for the 40 customers who came into the store for its opening. In 2012, Joanna was contacted by producer Katie Neff about filming a home renovation show for HGTV. Neff had seen Joanna’s design blog online and liked her style. When Joanna shared the news with Chip, he assured her it was a scam. Joanna trusted her gut and called Neff back right away. Fixer Upper was born one year later in 2013. In the first episode of the show, the reno masters transformed an “uninhabitable” house into a spectacular home (via Magnolia). The pilot gained 1.9 million viewers, making the show an instant hit. Fixer Upper was quickly renewed for five seasons with an option for a sixth. The network adored the Gaines family and they became HGTV royalty.

After Fixer Upper took off, the duo has been busier than ever. In 2015, the Gaines spent most of the year transforming rusted silos into a bustling retail center. Magnolia Market at the Silos opened in October 2015 and has brought in more than one million visitors a year. By 2016, they had a paint line of 150 colors, wallpaper designs, furniture, and opened a bed-and-breakfast. The first issue of their quarterly lifestyle magazine called The Magnolia Journal was also published. Their joint memoir, The Magnolia Story, was also published and became a New York Times Best Seller. Chip and Joanna show no signs of slowing down and continue to build their brand. They put their family first and their love continues to be wholesome.
