Following the cautionary moves of most esports today, Flashpoint has decided to temporarily postpone the matches of its inaugural season in favor of online competition. On March 8 the decision had been made to maintain the life competitive event but to take certain precautions such as relocating to a central location in Los Angeles, but given the continued spread of Covid-19, the need for greater caution is evident.

The news comes after the conclusion of the first round in Phase 1 of the group stage. All the teams will remain in Los Angeles for the time being and continue competing from their homes after matches are ready to be resumed.

The decision appears to have been made following an official recommendation by the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) that states gatherings of more than 50 people should be delayed or cancelled for the next eight weeks.

For now, it is not clear when the matches will resume as there are unique challenges associated with transitioning from a live tournament to online only. The issue of anti-cheat software is likely one small part and ensuring that players all have access to similar connections since even a small difference could mean the difference between victory and defeat.

So far, the action has been intense as some of the best players in the world show off their impressive skills. Cloud9 showed off a great comeback victory following a loss on Nuke and finished its series with a 2-1 victory over FunPlus Phoenix. Dignitas had a decently strong start as well in winning 2-1 against Orgless in the opening matches of Group C.

Although the second phase is on hold until online competitive play is ready to rollout, the scoring should remain identical as in the first phase. This means that teams will earn 150, 115, 50 or 30 points depending on how well they place in each respective group. The top-eight based on their point total will then advance to a double-elimination playoff bracket.

Players are all fighting for a piece of the $1 million prize pool, though oddly enough the breakdown how the pool will be distributed has not yet been specified. Hopefully Flashpoint will complete its transition to online play soon so that the action can start again. Best of luck to all teams in their race to the top!
