Although Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 did not have a campaign mode when it came out, it appears that Treyarch had plans for one well before the game was even announced.

The news comes from a Reddit user named ForeverDexus who posted a video of what appears to be gameplay footage of the early stages of the game’s campaign mode before the mode was canceled. Although the development studio decided to primarily focus on Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s online game modes (which is why they removed campaign mode), many early reports suggested that the campaign was too ambitious and was ultimately canceled due to issues with development.

In regards to the posted video, it is approximately two minutes in length and shows a part of a mission that has the player extract a CEO during an attack by enemy forces. While a lot of elements look familiar such as the map, the HUD, and the UI, the low-resolution character models that are next to the player suggest that the game’s campaign mode was in alpha-state, meaning that it wasn’t complete. Considering the fact that the map and the UI made it into the final version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, that would explain why they look so crisp and polished in the video.

Another thing that is worth noting is that the same Reddit user also dug up some pre-alpha Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 footage of a weapon and environmental damage test. However, the Reddit user didn’t specify where and/or how they managed to obtain the videos. Nonetheless, it seems that the evidence is right there for anyone who may be interested, especially those who wanted to see a campaign mode for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

With the next Call of Duty ready to be revealed and released later in the year, many rumors have been claiming that it will go back in time to the Cold War period. As a result, it may end up having some sort of a campaign mode unlike Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, especially since the game will be developed by Treyarch.
