Hayden Duvall, a former art director for BioWare has formed his own solo indie company and is releasing his first title Old Gods Rising, a Lovecraftian adventure game.

Hayden spent a number of years at BioWare working on successful titles like the Dragon Age series and Anthem. Unfortunately, he had been diagnosed ten years ago with a rare form of blood cancer in his spine. Hayden says the event has caused him to evaluate his life and ultimately realize he has dedicated most of his time to creating other people’s games. This inspired him to form his own solo indie studio and work on projects he was truly passionate about. After forming the aptly named Bad Blood Studios, he is set to release his first title, Old Gods Rising.

According to the studio’s website, the player will take the role of Thomas Winston, a Professor of Ancient History discredited for publishing a book full of what was revealed to be fraudulent evidence. He is hired by a film director to act as a consult for an upcoming film, “Old Gods Rising.” Thomas attempts to meet the film director at Ashgate university only to find things aren’t as they seem.

Describing the title as something that “would have happened if H.P. Lovecraft had been running the Firewatch team.” Old Gods Rising will be a first-person adventure mystery set to release on May 21st. What’s most interesting about the game is the possibility that it could be a world-ending encounter with the cosmic horrors that lie beyond, or it could be an elaborate ruse as part of some in-game reality tv series. Though the artwork suggests that eldritch nightmares and cults lie in the shadows of this game.

While the news of Hayden’s illness is tragic, it is inspiring that he has taken the moment to evaluate his life to that point and decided to take action to pursue his passions. The trailer showcases his excellent artistic abilities and it is likely his years of professional experience will show in the final game.

There’s been no word what Hayden will be working on after this game, whether he will make a separate title, a sequel, or additions to Old Gods Rising. Until then, players will have to wait patiently for this Lovecraftian title to release to uncover the mysteries within.
