Fortnite is coming to Android.

Last March, Fortnite developers Epic Games announced that their wildly successful battle royale shooter would be coming to mobile. First stop was iOS, where Fortnite landed with a big splash. To everyone’s surprise, the game actually translated to handheld pretty well, although there are some definite disconnects between the PC, console, and mobile experience.

But the experiment was a huge success, and now Epic has confirmed that Fortnite will arrive on Android OS phones sometime this summer. We don’t have the specific date when other than the vague timeline of the next few months. It could be in June or in the middle of September. We’ll just have to wait and see.

We got a few other tidbits launched at us with the same announcement, the first of which will be the long-awaited customizable HUD. One of the larger complaints players had with the mobile game was the placement of the touchscreen buttons which allow you to interact with your virtual avatar. Some players found the placement a little awkward or their fingers obstructed their view of their tiny screens. With the customizable HUD, you’ll be given a blueprint screen where you can place your touchscreen controls however you wish.

Next up is a new voice chat option for mobile users. Obviously this will really only be helpful if you’ve got a headset since playing Fortnite on speakerphone would probably not go over well while riding to work on the subway.

Another big deal is the technical aspects of the mobile game. While it’s definitely a successful port, there are still many aspects of the game that could be improved, not the least of which being improved controls. Epic specifically mentioned improvements to the autorun feature that would make it easier for mobile players to shoot and scoot, something their PC and console brethren have an easier time of.

Other technical performance improvements include reducing the overall size of the install file, improving optimization and stability, and improving battery drain performance so that Fortnite won’t suck your battery dry like a starving electromagnetic vampire.

And finally, mobile stats are in the works but likely won’t be out until the Android version makes its splash sometime over the summer. Patience, young Fortnite players. All will come in time.
