And with that, the whole concept of eSports just became a little more legitimate. Baby steps, perhaps, but crucial ones.

Now, just about everybody has their own deeply passionate opinion about Fortnite. Back in April, the British Royal Family’s own Prince Harry stepped forward to argue that video game addiction is a devastating force and Fortnite is right there at the heart of it. The game should be banned, in his view. However you feel about the title, though, from ardent support to all-out snark and general indifference, there’s no denying that it’s a pop culture juggernaut and doesn’t appear to be going anywhere.

The rise and continuing success of Epic Games’ cash cow is intrinsically linked to that of eSports as a whole. The concept has truly taken off now, and the competitive scene is worth millions. The sorts of prize pots available at high-level tournaments will make your head spin, and children (and even their parents) are beginning to see professional gaming not as a pipe dream, but as a viable career path going forward.

Lucrative as pro gaming and eSports can be, though, the whole concept is still very much in its early stages. If this is really going to grow to be an industry that rivals traditional sports, similar steps are going to have to be taken to protect players. Which is where the new Fortnite players’ union comes in.

The Fortnite Professional Players’ Association, as it’s been deemed, was officially introduced on Twitter late last week:

As Destructoid reports, the organization was founded by a small group of pro players from Europe and the United States (sixteen in all, with additional members pending). As the FNPPA make clear, they don’t have the loftiest of goals. What they want to do first is secure something vital to their future growth: a more direct dialogue with Epic Games over the competitive scene and its changes over time.

Hopefully, this move proves productive. After all, Fortnite and its most influential players are intrinsically linked. It’d be to everybody’s mutual benefit to ensure the FNPPA’s growth and success.
