A Nightmare on Elm Street slasher Freddy Krueger is known for his trademark knife glove, but in Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, he doesn’t actually use it to kill. From the moment he first appeared onscreen in Wes Craven’s original 1984 classic, it was clear that Freddy – as played by genre icon Robert Englund – wouldn’t be a character that just made a quick splash and faded away. Freddy was the living embodiment of bad dreams, an affirmation that every fear of the dark and unknown that resides in the back of one’s mind was well-founded.
While Freddy’s burnt face and dirty wardrobe certainly played a role in making him a memorable creation, perhaps the most iconic aspect of the character is Krueger’s knife glove, sometimes described simply as his finger knives. A child murderer – and implied molester – in life, Freddy used the skills he learned working in a boiler room to fashion a homemade weapon so terrifying that the mere sight of it would be enough to drop any victim’s jaw.
Freddy’s knife glove might seem a limiting murder weapon on the surface, but over the course of the first five Nightmare on Elm Street films, he always managed to employ it to interesting effect. That is until 1991’s Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, in which Springwood’s resident boogeyman never once put the glove to bad use.
Freddy’s Dead Saw Krueger Ignore His Knife Glove Weapon
While it’s unclear if a conscious creative decision was made going into Freddy’s Dead that Krueger wouldn’t use the glove for a kill, or it just kind of ended up that way without anyone noticing, it does make for an odd footnote in Freddy’s legacy. That’s especially true due to Freddy’s long-lost daughter Kathryn actually using the glove on him in the finale. In a way though, it kind of fits, when one considers where Freddy was at the time as a character. While Freddy had cracked a few jokes in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, the fourth and fifth films had steadily ratcheted up his comedic tendencies. By Freddy’s Dead, Krueger had almost become a live-action cartoon, riding around on a broom like a witch and claiming victims inside a self-made video game world.
Freddy had become all about the theatrical, over-the-top kill, and by that standard, simply slicing someone with his glove might’ve seemed underwhelming. Even in Nightmare on Elm Street 5, Freddy only used the glove to cut up a victim he’d already turned into comic book paper. Today, Freddy’s Dead is often considered the worst film in the original A Nightmare on Elm Street series, mainly due to how wacky the formerly scary villain had become. While a flashback to Freddy as a human killer allowed Englund to restore some of his menace, it just wasn’t in enough of the movie to save it. Still, the sequel has its fans.
