Friday The 13th Every Victim Pamela Voorhees Killed Herself

In the original Friday the 13th (1980), Pamela Voorhees, played by Betsy Palmer, killed a group of camp counselors through several elaborate means. Her revenge-fueled massacre, which began in 1958 with the murder of two amorous teens, totaled nine victims on and off screen. While the franchise is filled with memorable deaths, mainly executed by Pamela’s son Jason, the maniacal mom is the instigator of the original body count. The list of every victim Pamela killed herself is both modest and memorably vicious.

While the Friday the 13th franchise is most remembered for its thrilling murder set pieces, many forget that the original film contained few onscreen deaths. Special effects icon Tom Savini (NOS4A2) was responsible for the inventive murders, which take up a small amount of screen time when watched closely. His memorable make-up and effects work were the hallmarks of the film, giving Pamela’s bloody handiwork a shocking realism that resonated with horror audiences at the time. Though the body count was rather restrained when compared to the large numbers that Jason would accrue in the later films, the ex-camp cook carried out several ingenious murders that helped define the series.

In her efforts to keep Camp Crystal Lake closed for good, Pamela Voorhees instigated several elaborate murders, beginning a year after the accidental death of her son. From the violent stabbing of two teens in 1958 to the unlucky birthday massacre of seven additional counselors, here is a list of every victim Pamela killed herself.

Barry (Stabbed in the Stomach) and Claudette (Stabbed Offscreen)

During a camp sing-a-long in 1958, Camp Crystal Lake counselors Barry (Willie Adams) and Claudette (Debra Hayes) sneak off to a deserted cabin to fool around. While they are getting intimate, they are interrupted by a familiar authority figure, who proceeds to violently stab Barry in the stomach. Claudette’s fate is inferred by a freeze frame of her terrified face. A vintage publicity still featuring Claudette getting her throat slit alludes to a more violent onscreen end for her. While it is unknown why Pamela chooses to murder only these two teens, it is inferred that they are either symbolic of the counselors who left her son to drown or they are the very two that were responsible.

Annie (Slit Throat)

While hitchhiking to Camp Crystal Lake, Annie (Robbi Morgan) is warned by a friendly truck driver (Rex Everhart) that she should stay away. After taking her as far as he can, Annie hitches a ride with an unseen driver in a jeep. When they miss the camp exit, Annie gets nervous and ends up jumping out of the moving vehicle. An extended chase through the woods ends with Annie getting her throat slit by the unseen driver (Mrs. Voorhees). Annie may have been singled out first as she mentions earlier that she’s the camp cook—the same job that Pamela had years ago. Annie may have also simply been the most convenient victim, so her early death could have just been unlucky timing.

Ned (Slit Throat Offscreen)

While Friday the 13th is famous for its inventive murders, four of the ten deaths in the film happen off-camera. A few publicity shots released before the it debuted would seem to indicate that some of them were meant to have occurred onscreen. The film was given some early screenings, which helped director Sean Cunningham craft the final cut. Evidently, some scenes with gruesome effects shots were lost for the sake of momentum.

The first official death at the camp is also one that occurs offscreen. Ned (Mark Nelson), the camp prankster, spies someone entering a cabin and follows them inside. Pamela, the unseen assailant, slashes his throat with a knife, then hides his body on a top bunk bed.

Jack (Arrow Through Throat)

Young lovers Jack, a pre-fame Kevin Bacon, and Marcie (Jeannine Taylor) hear a thunderstorm approaching and decide to hide out from the storm in the same cabin where Ned was murdered. They make love just underneath the bunk where Ned’s body has been stashed. When Marcie leaves to go to the bathroom, a drop of blood from the top bunk falls on Jack’s face. Just as he takes notice of the blood, a hand from underneath the bed holds his face down while an arrow is pushed through his neck.

Marcie (Axe in Head)

After Jack is impaled with the arrow, Marcie is followed into the bathroom stalls and watched by Pamela. Marcie hears someone in the room and, thinking she is being pranked, searches the nearby shower stalls. After finding no one in them, she turns to see Pamela wielding an axe. As she screams in terror, Marcie is killed by a swift axe blow to her head. This particular effect had to be shot twice; the second shot came months later when it was discovered the tubes delivering the fake blood to the head appliance could be seen.

Brenda (Offscreen and Unknown)

Brenda’s (Laurie Bartram) death happens offscreen while she is investigating cries for help during the rainstorm. The voice, which is Pamela imitating her presumably dead son Jason, leads her to the archery range. The lights suddenly come on, momentarily blinding her before the scene abruptly ends. Later, Brenda is thrown through a cabin window to frighten final girl Alice (Adrienne King). Ropes are tied around her body and her face is bruised and bloody. Issue #6 of Fangoria magazine features a shot of Brenda—incorrectly identified as Marci—frightened and backed up against a door. With her face in the same beaten and bloody condition, it would seem that footage of her death was shot but cut from the final edit.

Steve Christy (Stabbed)

After going into town earlier in the day and experiencing car trouble during the storm, a police sergeant gives camp owner Steve (Peter Brouwer) a ride back to the campgrounds. Once there, he sees Pamela, whom he recognizes as a friendly presence. She quickly stabs him in the stomach with a knife and hangs him upside down from a tree.

Bill (Throat Slit, Shot with Arrows Offscreen)

When the power goes out, friendly counselor Bill (Harry Crosby) leaves Alice to check on the generator. Bill’s death happens offscreen, though he is likely murdered in the dark generator room. Pamela slits Bill’s throat, then pins him to the generator room door with arrows to his head and body. There are rumors that Bill’s death was shot, but ultimately not used. While there is no photographic evidence of this, Cunningham has alluded to certain effects shots that didn’t make the final cut. In issue #6 of Fangoria he states, “As it turned out, we shot an awful lot more of the effects than were used in the picture.” This was not the case with the sequel or the rest of the films in the series.

Fires, Poison Water, General Chaos

When Annie is speaking with the truck driver regarding the terrible events at the camp, he mentions that there were previously fires and poisoned water. These were presumably acts of sabotage by Pamela Voorhees to keep the camp closed. Whether or not these events caused intentional or inadvertent deaths are never revealed. While Pamela Voorhees’ total body count in the original Friday the 13th is nine, she may have been responsible for several more.
