Friday the 13th: A New Beginning moved away from Jason Voorhees as the main antagonist, but there’s also an intriguing theory Roy was possessed by Jason when he committed his killings. The fifth movie in the series picks up years after Jason’s death and follows Tommy Jarvis (John Shepherd). Tommy killed Jason in self-defense as a child and he’s implied to have lived in a severely traumatized state ever since. Audiences meet him again while he’s en route to Pinehurst Halfway House, a place for psychologically troubled teens. In typical slasher fashion, a murder spree soon takes place in the area surrounding the facility.
Since Jason has (supposedly) already been killed, it’s unclear if he’s back or if someone has taken his place. That is, until the very end, after Tommy is finally able to use his fight-or-flight response to kill the mysterious murderer. Later, the sheriff explains to survivor Pam (Melanie Kinnaman) that the body was identified as Roy (Dick Wieand), a paramedic seen earlier in the film. He was one of the EMTs who took away the body of a slain halfway house resident Joey after a random, brutal ax murder in the backyard. It turns out Joey was Roy’s estranged son and seeing his child’s butchered remains was so deeply disturbing to him he was sent over the edge. This sparked Roy’s killing spree, and he adopted Jason Voorhees’ mask and overall MO to camouflage himself.
This narrative certainly makes sense, especially since Roy seemed so distraught at the sight of Joey’s body. But there’s another popular theory, with some fans thinking Roy was actually possessed by Jason’s spirit when he went on his bloodthirsty escapades. There some evidence to support this idea. For one thing, for a regular man, Roy seems to have an astounding amount of strength and resilience. He crushes one teen’s skull with a belt, breaks down doors and even bounces back after being plowed into with a tractor. It’s quite possible the look in Roy’s eyes early in Friday the 13th: Part 5, as he gazes at his son’s lifeless body isn’t just shock and horror. It might also be the moment when Jason starts burrowing his way into Roy’s mind.
At the end of the film while alone in his hospital room, Tommy goes into a trance-like state, where he hallucinates a version of Jason standing at the end of his bed. This isn’t unusual for Tommy; he’s been enduring flashbacks, nightmares, and other hallucinations since the beginning of the film. But this instance is different. Instead of becoming distressed, he merely lets out a gasp before staring at the imagined killer with an eerie calmness. There isn’t any dialogue, but it seems to viewers that Jason might be, if not actually possessing Tommy, at least telepathically communicating with him. And, of course, Tommy dons a Jason mask at the very end, and the movie closes with the implication he killed Pam.
Years later in the franchise’s ninth installment, Jason Goes to Hell, the concept of Jason body-hopping was made quite literal. It’s a possibility that, while making Part 5, the writers were thinking about different routes they might take later in the series, including possession. Friday the 13th: A New Beginning was received poorly by both critics and viewers (who wanted Jason back) alike. While Jason doesn’t physically appear in part five, his presence lingers all over it, and if this theory can be taken seriously, maybe he was behind the killings after all.
