In Friends, Monica is known for her uptight personality, but every once in a while she does some things that do not really feel representative of her.

Out of the six core characters in Friends, Monica Geller is perhaps the most unpredictable. One minute she can be as stern as you like, and then the next, she can do something completely out of left field.

We love so many aspects of her persona, but there are also a few things we don’t quite understand. She’s a complex individual and there’s no way of getting around that, but whether it was a storyline loophole or a personal thought as a fan, we thought it’d be good to run through a few thoughts we have about everyone’s favorite cleanaholic.

10 The Dirty Cupboard

Friends 10 Things We Never Understood About Monica Geller

Everyone wants to know what’s behind the secret cupboard that Monica keeps protecting with her life. When it’s finally opened up for the world to see, it’s pretty stunning for us to discover that Monica has a dirty past.

Chandler is absolutely loving it, but with Mon’s OCD, it seems odd to think this would even be a thing.

Perhaps the irony of it all is the whole point, but it kind of reminds us of when Ted was no longer vomit free in How I Met Your Mother. It’s as if the glass had shattered.

9 Why Her Mom Is So Mean

Monica’s parents quite clearly favor Ross over Monica, and that much is obvious. It’s never nice to have a favorite child under any circumstances, but of course, she just has to deal with it.

The problem is that her mom is so much meaner than her dad. She constantly puts her down, rarely compliments her, and generally doesn’t come across as a very nice person – whereas Jack is a fairly decent guy.

They say you can’t pick your family, and in this instance, we really wish Monica was able to pick a different mom.

8 Fat Shaming

One problem that Monica has been forced to deal with, seemingly all her life is the lasting effects from her days of being overweight.

Despite the fact that it appears to be an incredibly mean thing to do, everyone still decides to fat-shame her whenever the topic comes up.

If you were to air that on a sitcom in 2020, as you can probably imagine, the reaction wouldn’t be quite as generous from the general public.

Maybe that’s just a sign of the times, but either way, it seems off.

7 On Again, Off Again Rivalry With Ross

At time points during the show’s run, Monica and Ross can’t stand each other. At other points, they bond over the past and have a great time in each other’s company. It’s quite the balance.

Perhaps that’s just the nature of a sibling relationship, but she does blow hot and cold pretty often. It seems like she holds some kind of resentment towards him as a result of Ross clearly being the favorite in the family.

6 Dating Someone So Much Younger

Young Ethan is clearly winning over Monica already by the time they start to get a bit more intimate, even though she knows he’s just a senior in college.

While we can understand why she thought it was so gross when she discovered he was actually a senior in high school, we’re surprised that she even went through with dating someone that was in college.

It’s not like it’s some kind of taboo thing to do, but it goes without saying that it’s a bit outside the comfort zone for Monica.

5 The Adoption Lie

Everyone understands just how desperate Monica and Chandler are to have children, and when they find out they can’t have any of their own, it’s a pretty devastating turn of events.

Still, even with that being the case, we’re stunned that Monica is perfectly okay with going along with the adoption lie. They both pretend to be something they’re not, all in the name of swindling a baby out of Erica.

That may seem like a pretty dramatic way of putting it, but desperate people will do some fairly desperate things in times of need.

4 Joy In Screwing Over David

When Phoebe is thinking about accepting David’s potential proposal towards the end of Friends, Monica and Chandler – and specifically Monica – feel like they simply have to do something about it.

They know that she’s still in love with Mike and while we don’t necessarily have too much against them for that, they do take a whole lot of pride in their meddling, even when they’re aware of how much this has probably hurt David.

It shows Monica, in our mind, at her very worst, and it’s not a great look for her.

3 Contemplating A Reunion With Richard

Going back to your ex in times of panic is a natural response for a lot of people, but when Monica does so with Richard, it just feels wrong.

Richard is clearly coming across as the bad guy, whereas Chandler is the man Mon has fallen so deeply in love with. Some would just pass it off as poor judgment, but it feels like so much more than that.

She makes the decision to go over to his apartment, and that isn’t something you do on a whim. It’s a thought out process.

2 Why So Competitive

If Monica loses at anything, we can only imagine how much of a bad loser she would be over the subsequent days – and potentially even weeks.

If you were also competitive then it might work in your favor, but for those of us that aren’t big fans of the showmanship, it wouldn’t be ideal.

The table tennis situation is a prime example of this. Between Mon and Mike, there’s a whole lot of competitive testosterone flying through the air.

Chandler certainly has his work cut out for him from now to the end of time.

1 Not Noticing Chandler Chemistry

In the early seasons, we see the beginning of some kind of chemistry between Monica and Chandler. At first, it’s nothing more than a few looks and comments here and there. Then, in London, it escalates.

The bizarre thing is that Monica doesn’t even seem to entertain the idea of them being together in the early days. Perhaps the writers just didn’t realize what they had right in front of them, but opposites attract more often than not, and Monica should’ve been smart enough to recognize that from the word go.
