Monica and Chandler’s relationship in Friends was supposed to be brief, but the writers decided to change it after the positive reaction from fans. While Ross and Rachel’s relationship was turbulent and unpredictable, Monica and Chandler’s was light and easy. It was a plotline that the writers wanted to try for fun and never expected to be a significant part of the sitcom until it ended.

During the first few seasons of Friends, only Ross and Rachel had a clear love connection among the Central Perk gang. Meanwhile, the rest of the group dated other people to varying degrees of success. Joey and Phoebe’s romances were fleeting, but Monica and Chandler had their respective constant partners. After dating a string of guys, Monica began seeing Richard who seemed to be the perfect match for her. Unfortunately, she eventually realized that they were simply at different points in their lives and they didn’t see a common future together. Chandler, on the other hand, was in a less serious relationship with Janice, but despite that, it seemed like he was always drawn to her. But that, too, didn’t work out.

So, it took one night in London during Ross’ wedding to Emily for Chandler and Monica to sleep with each other, and from then on, there was no going back for them. However, this wasn’t originally the plan, as revealed during the Friends reunion, titled The One Where They Got Back Together, by the show co-creator David Crane. Originally, “they would sleep together in London; it was a brief thing and we’d have some fun with it afterwards” as the pals ruminated about what went down between them. His fellow creator, Marta Kauffman, cited the visceral reaction to the pair being partnered up that made them realized that “there’s more” to their coupling. The commentary was intercut with the scene where Chandler and Monica were still in bed after they’d just spent the night while the live audiences cheered very loudly. Since this revelation happened at the end of Friends season 4, the creators and the writers of the show had extra time in between to really figure out how they’re going to move forward with this new couple which the fans seemed to immediately love.

Crane further added that from the initial reception, they expanded the pair’s story by floating the idea that Chandler and Monica’s romance may be more than just a hookup. But even as they were compelled to continue exploring the possibilities of this new love line, they weren’t entirely sure how far it will go. Instead of rushing into a permanent decision about how the plotline would fully play out, the sitcom had fun with their secret affair which Kauffman said gave them a lot of humorous material. Unfortunately, the Friends reunion didn’t reveal when and how exactly the writers decided that Chandler and Monica were the real deal. But considering that the couple never split up after the start of their relationship, unlike Ross and Rachel, it’s safe to assume that the continued positive reception to the unraveling of their love story was a deciding factor to go all the way with them.

Admittedly Monica and Chandler’s story may be less romantic in the conventional sense compared to Ross and Rachel’s. But in hindsight, their relationship was much more realistic and perhaps even better built to last. Learning that the Friends creators didn’t plan for them to end up getting married illustrates how important it is to consider viewers’ opinions when it comes to any project because sometimes, it can lead to unexpectedly great storylines.
