An upcoming documentary, titled From Bedrooms To Billions: The PlayStation Revolution, will be a nostalgia trip across the ages, peering back at what has made Sony’s in-home entertainment system truly epic and extraordinary. It is the third film in the Bedrooms To Billions series and was funded via a Kickstarter campaign, which first began all the way back in 2017.

Now, only three years later, filmmakers Anthony and Nicola Caulfield will take viewers back in time on the eve of Sony’s own next-generation system, showcasing the gaming legend that is the PlayStation.

Since December of 1994, the PlayStation system has remained among the most iconic pieces of gaming equipment and a hallmark platform in the industry, evidenced by the immense brand loyalty shared amongst PlayStation fans. Sony Interactive Entertainment truly proved themselves, which had only resulted following a devastating fallout between the Japanese-based company and one of its most valiant rivals, Nintendo. Nearly 26 years later, its system has evolved in many extraordinary ways, inviting portable gaming platforms, unreplicable exclusive experiences, virtual reality, and, with its forthcoming next-generation system, a reinvigorated storage solution.

This upcoming indie doc will focus on these various challenges, taking a broad look at how Sony, with the help of its gaming platform, matured into the enterprise it is today. As the production page reads:

“The PlayStation Revolution is an independent documentary feature film that uncovers the incredible story behind the creation of the Sony PlayStation. It is an essential watch for anyone interested in video games and the history of the biggest entertainment industry on earth. The film investigates why Sony decided to enter the video games business when it was already dominated by both Nintendo and Sega, who not only produced their own hardware but made and published fantastic games. To compete, Sony would not only have to design and build a new piece of hardware, but they would have to find a way to persuade the game development industry to take a chance and develop games for it long before it even came out.”

With Sony’s most recent $250 million investment into Epic Games, it’s clear the company has its eyes set on a future even brighter and more elegant than its past.

From Bedrooms To Billions: The PlayStation Revolution will feature a variety of notable identities, such as Mark Cerny and Hideo Kojima. It will have both a standard edition ($25) and a Special Edition ($29), the latter of which will feature a multitude of extra content, such as behind the scenes looks at the creation of both Wipeout and Gran Turismo, in addition to director’s commentary with a number of Sony veterans.

From “greatness awaits” to “play has no limits,” experience the history of Sony’s PlayStation on September 7th.
