Frozen 2 has a major twist when the true nature of Frozen’s fifth elemental spirit is revealed, but the ending should mean more for Anna in Frozen 3. At the end of Frozen 2, the fifth spirit is shown to be Anna and Elsa, together, but the focus is much more on Elsa and her journey. The third Frozen film is a good chance for Disney to explore the nature of the fifth spirit more deeply.
The fifth spirit is said to be “a bridge between us and the magic and nature,” according to Honeymaren, a member of the Northuldra. At the end of Frozen 2, Elsa seemingly discovers that she is the fifth spirit, gaining power over the four elements — water, fire, wind and earth. But as Elsa later reveals, the fifth spirit exists in the relationship between her and Anna. Their sisterhood is what forges a bridge between magic, represented by Elsa, and the mundane, represented by Anna. As Elsa says, “a bridge has two sides, and mother had two daughters.” Anna and Elsa freed the Enchanted Forest together.
Anna’s abilities aren’t as visible as Elsa’s, but her determination, resilience and love are critical to Frozen 2’s happy ending. It’s those traits that help Anna destroy the dam, revive Elsa and ultimately broker peace between the Northuldra and Arendelle. However, Anna does not get as much concrete recognition as Elsa. Although both end the movie by stepping into leadership roles — Elsa as the head of the Enchanted Forest and Anna as Queen of Arendelle — Elsa undergoes more visible changes, gaining new powers. Frozen 3 should take a closer look at how Anna grows into her role as one half of the fifth spirit. Anna’s power is in her connection to people — her love for her sister, Sven, and the subjects of Arendelle. Frozen 3 should explore those relationships more deeply, examining how Anna’s love prompts her to save others, keep going in the face of tragedy and guide her to do the right thing.
Frozen 2 never really addresses the implications of Anna’s connection to the fifth spirit. At the end of the movie, Anna returns home to Arendelle, seemingly ending up right back where she started. Part of the problem is that Anna’s powers are more ephemeral than Elsa’s. As the two parts of the fifth spirit, Elsa represents magic and adventure, while Anna represents love and loyalty. But Anna is equally as brave, following Elsa into adventures without hesitation. Danger doesn’t dissuade her — whatever Elsa risks, Anna is willing to do the same.
Anna’s ability to tame the Earth Giants shows that her powers are equally as important as Elsa’s. When Anna and Elsa venture into the Enchanted Forest, they are confronted with wild magic that threatens them and the Northuldra. Elsa’s ability to tame some of these elements foreshadows her role as the fifth spirit. She’s able to use her ice magic to gain control over wind, fire and water. The most powerful element, however, is not tamed by Elsa, but by Anna. At the end of the movie, Anna wakes the Earth Giants, tricking them into using their power to destroy the dam. The giants are later seen to be working with Elsa and the Northuldra, turned from destructive terrors into calm, lumbering mammoths.
While Elsa jumps into the unknown, Anna is a grounding force, reining Elsa in whenever it looks like she might be going too far or risking too much. Frozen 3 might be able to highlight that trait by giving Anna the ability to neutralize magic or control volatile situations in some way. While Frozen 2 made it a point to avoid giving Anna magical abilities, perhaps she could act as an anti-magical force, bringing balance to power. Anna’s love of the kingdom and its people was also explored in a song that was later cut from Frozen 2, “Home.” Frozen 3 could show Anna’s role as the fifth spirit by highlighting her love in a similar way, giving Anna a breakout song in the sequel.
