Frozen’s villainous Prince Hans originally had a song of his own in an early draft of the movie, but the track needed to be cut as its inclusion would have spoiled the Disney hit’s biggest (and most effective) twist. Released in 2013, Disney’s Frozen was a unique spin on Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen that rewrote the story from the perspective of the misunderstood title character, who here became the now-iconic heroine Elsa.
A hit with critics and audiences alike, Frozen won acclaim for its stellar, catchy soundtrack (which included Idina Menzel’s instant classic “Let It Go” and the jaunty “Love Is An Open Door”), as well as its playful twisting of Disney conventions. In Frozen, the seemingly heroic prince who arrived to sweep the naive Anna off her feet turned out to be the primary antagonist of the movie. Meanwhile, Frozen’s apparent villain Elsa ended up being the triumphant, misunderstood heroine—but this bombshell twist was almost given away in a song cut from the movie.
Frozen’s Prince Hans broke a Disney tradition by being one of the first major villains to not have a song to himself, a reliable trope that appears in everything from The Lion King to The Little Mermaid and typically allowed the character to voice their evil scheme in terms that viewers (but not their fellow characters) could follow. However, there’s a good reason that Hans’ brief villain song “You’re You” was jettisoned from Frozen, and it’s that the track’s mean-spirited lyrics would have made the character’s status as a villain immediately obvious. Cutting Prince Hans’ original song and replacing it with the more upbeat duet “Love Is An Open Door” allowed the creators of Frozen to hide the character’s true nature and made the eventual twist genuinely surprising, a rare occurrence for most Disney fare.
However, it’s nonetheless a shame that viewers didn’t get to hear “You’re You,” as the blithely cruel track does feature some superb lyrics for Prince Hans, who notes to an obliviously charmed Anna that “other people walk through life where you prefer to skip,” before adding in an aside, “and other people watch their step where you’ll most likely trip.” The song’s abrupt ending sees Prince Hans goes as far as cutting Anna off and talking over her before she can return his “feelings,” making the character more of a Gaston-esque egotistical blowhard and blatant schemer than the more subtle incarnation that ended up in Frozen. As funny as the lyrics are, however, the song’s exclusion from Frozen was the correct call given how effective Hans’ eventual villain reveal ended up being.
It’s a fun track, but one that undeniably makes it clear that Hans will be the villain of Frozen and, as such, needed to be cut to save Frozen’s best twist. Much like Frozen II revealed that the revered King Runeard was the prequel’s villain, Frozen’s revelation that Prince Hans was a scoundrel provided a surprise even for seasoned Disney fans and proved that the series could provide satisfying Disney princess adventures that nonetheless toyed with the conventions of the genre rather than sticking strictly to the story beats expected from them.
