Yuki Sohma is one of the main protagonists of Fruits Basket and is loved by fans for his cool and charming persona. At first, Yuki comes off as calm and collected with no visible flaws. He’s smart, talented, and always manages to beat Kyo in every competition with ease.

However, beneath his composed exterior, Yuki grapples with low self-esteem, fear of rejection, and feelings of isolation and loneliness. Yuki attempts to keep others at a distance and spends much of the series learning how to relate to trust others. His past is littered with traumatic experiences, and it’s only with the help of Tohru and his friends that he’s able to slowly work through and communicate his feelings.

10 His Parents Sold Him To Akito

In Season 2, fans learned that Yuki’s parents forced him to go live with Akito. Not only did his parents abandon him to Akito’s sadistic whims, but it is also revealed that his parents sold him to Akito in order to raise their own wealth and status within the family. Yuki’s parents profited off of his suffering, and his pleas for them to take him back fell on deaf ears. Thankfully, Hatsuharu’s love for Yuki prompted Hatsuharu to beg Shigure to extract Yuki from his predicament, and Shigure eventually agreed to let Yuki live with him outside of the main Sohma compound.

9 He Was Abused By Akito

After Yuki was forced to go live with Akito, Akito quickly began to isolate Yuki from other members of the Sohma family. She went so far as to lock Yuki in a dark, windowless room for days at a time. Akito verbally, emotionally, and psychologically abused Yuki, telling him that he was worthless and no one would ever love him. Over time, Akito managed to convince Yuki that the other Zodiac members hated him, and the constant denigration and manipulation that he endured eventually caused him to become temporarily mute. Akito’s abusive treatment of Yuki left lasting impressions upon him, giving him a fear of small, dark spaces, and a lingering fear of rejection, and the belief that no one will ever truly love him.

8 He Grew Up Without Friends

Due to his position as the Rat and status as Akito’s favorite, Yuki had no say over his life as a child. Akito isolated him from the other Zodiac members and poisoned his mind over time as she convinced him that everyone hated him. By the time he started to attend an elite private school, Yuki had become very emotionally distant and reserved.

He managed to make friends with some kids at his school after he was invited to play soccer with them, but when he accidentally bumped into a young girl he transformed into a Rat. This event prompted Hatori to erase his new friends’ memories, and he proceeded to grow up friendless until he met Tohru Honda outside Shigure’s house.

7 His Zodiac Status Ruined His Relationship With Kyo

Yuki is possessed by the Rat Zodiac Spirit, and as such takes on several characteristics of the Rat as well as embodying all of the Rat’s traits in the hierarchy of the Zodiac. As the Rat, Yuki is first in the Zodiac, and considered the most favored member by Akito, and this status puts a strain on Yuki’s relationship with the other Zodiacs. In particular, his status deeply affected his relationship with Kyo. When Yuki and Kyo first met, Kyo admitted that he hated Yuki because the Rat tricked the Cat into not attending the banquet in the story of the Zodiacs. Additionally, Kyo’s Cat Spirit and Yuki’s Rat Spirit are natural enemies, as seen by their frequent competitions which Yuki always wins due to the superior status of his Rat Spirit, further cementing Kyo’s hatred of him.

6 He Has A Difficult Relationship With His Brother

While Yuki’s status as the Rat Zodiac ruined his relationship with Kyo, it also managed to estrange him from his older brother, Ayame, when they were children. Since Yuki received all of the attention from the family, Ayame was left to his own devices, and as a result, he ignored the abuse that Yuki endured out of spite. Yuki grew up feeling abandoned by his older brother and is later annoyed when Ayame tries to repair their relationship by constantly butting into Yuki’s affairs. Although Tohru manages to bring Ayame and Yuki closer together, their relationship is far from perfect.

5 His Fan Club Bullies Girls In His Name

The Prince Yuki Fan Club is a group of girls at Yuki’s school that are in love with him and worked tirelessly to win his favor and promote his popularity amongst their classmates. However, the fan club’s members often resort to sinister tactics to win Yuki’s favor, and their obsession often leads them to bully Yuki’s classmates in their distorted desire to protect and impress Yuki. The members of the club bully Machi for not paying Yuki the respect that they think he deserves, and also berate Tohru every chance they get. Yuki feels powerless to prevent this bullying and is seriously distraught that others would go to such lengths to impress him.

4 He Doesn’t Know How To Take Care Of Himself

Yuki was separated from his parents at a young age, and even in the short time that he was raised by them, they were never particularly doting or attentive to his needs. It’s therefore not surprising that Yuki never learned how to take care of himself properly. He is not a morning person and frequently wakes up late.

His room is always a complete mess, and he has no sense of style. He can’t cook even simple meals, and all of his attempts are met with groans and grimaces of anguish. Yuki grew up without a role model that could teach him how to practice self-care, and this absence left a gaping hole in his development.

3 He Struggles With His Status As The Rat

As the Rat Zodiac, Yuki is favored by Akito as first amongst all the Zodiac members. His status in the mythology of the Zodiac granted him special privileges, such as always being seated next to Akito during the New Year’s banquet. However, Yuki struggles greatly with his favored status. He does not think he is worthy of being the first of the Zodiacs and feels ashamed that the Rat used his cleverness to trick the other members of the Zodiac in the story, especially the Cow and the Cat. Yuki is weighed down by the burden of being the Rat and wishes desperately that he did not have to be the favored son of the Sohma family.

2 He Does Not Know How To Communicate His Feelings

Yuki discovered from a young age that his needs are not important. He was abandoned by his parents to advance their own needs, and he was abused by Akito to satisfy her whims, so he never learned how to vocalize what he wants. Whenever Yuki is put in a position where he has to make a choice he shuts up and instead defers to others. His reticence to communicate his needs is a sign not only that he does not feel that his wants are important, but that he also does not even understand what he wants in the first place. Throughout the series, he slowly discovers his voice and learns how to communicate his wants and desires, but he still freezes up at times when under duress.

1 He Feels Left Out By Kyo’s And Tohru’s Relationship

The relationship between Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo has always felt more maternal than romantic. Tohru takes care of Kyo and Yuki and helps them to discover their needs and actualize their dreams. However, as Kyo’s and Tohru’s relationship has evolved, signs of a budding romance have begun to emerge. This change in the dynamic of their relationship has left Yuki feeling like an outsider, as he is forced to watch Kyo and Tohru grow closer together while he struggles to figure out his own feelings. The relationship between Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo is one of the best things about Fruits Basket, and how Yuki approaches his friend’s changing relationship remains to be seen.
