However, beneath his composed exterior, Yuki grapples with low self-esteem, fear of rejection, and feelings of isolation and loneliness. Yuki attempts to keep others at a distance and spends much of the series learning how to relate to trust others. His past is littered with traumatic experiences, and it’s only with the help of Tohru and his friends that he’s able to slowly work through and communicate his feelings.

Yuki’s parents profited off of his suffering, and his pleas for them to take him back fell on deaf ears. Thankfully, Hatsuharu’s love for Yuki prompted Hatsuharu to beg Shigure to extract Yuki from his predicament, and Shigure eventually agreed to let Yuki live with him outside of the main Sohma compound.

Over time, Akito managed to convince Yuki that the other Zodiac members hated him, and the constant denigration and manipulation that he endured eventually caused him to become temporarily mute. Akito’s abusive treatment of Yuki left lasting impressions upon him, giving him a fear of small, dark spaces, and a lingering fear of rejection, and the belief that no one will ever truly love him.

The members of the club bully Machi for not paying Yuki the respect that they think he deserves, and also berate Tohru every chance they get. Yuki feels powerless to prevent this bullying and is seriously distraught that others would go to such lengths to impress him.

Throughout the series, he slowly discovers his voice and learns how to communicate his wants and desires, but he still freezes up at times when under duress.

The relationship between Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo has always felt more maternal than romantic. Tohru takes care of Kyo and Yuki and helps them to discover their needs and actualize their dreams. However, as Kyo’s and Tohru’s relationship has evolved, signs of a budding romance have begun to emerge. This change in the dynamic of their relationship has left Yuki feeling like an outsider, as he is forced to watch Kyo and Tohru grow closer together while he struggles to figure out his own feelings. The relationship between Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo is one of the best things about Fruits Basket, and how Yuki approaches his friend’s changing relationship remains to be seen.
