Futurama remains one of the best animated series of all time, and a show that audiences of all ages can watch. Though Futurama hasn’t found the eternal lives of shows like The Simpsons or Family Guy, there is still plenty of cool trivia to glean from the show that fans probably didn’t notice the first time. The Planet Express Building is essentially a treasure trove of trivia.

The central location of the galaxy and time-spanning series offers plenty for fans watching again or for the first time to consider. The iconic building, somewhat like the TARDIS, is apparently bigger on the inside with more strange rooms and details than it can hold.

10 Cointe Observatory

The Planet Express building has a unique design that’s instantly iconic. Though Futurama got some things right about the future, and a few wrong, one thing it appears to have nailed is a nod to the past. Though it’s not clear if the building is a direct reference, the Planet Express building bears a striking resemblance to the Cointe Observatory in Liege, Belgium. The aging observatory features a similar red exterior, watchtower, and shed with a retractable roof, just like in the show.

9 Uncertain Street

The origins of the building are a little uncertain, and so is the precise location of the Planet Express Building. It’s absolutely clear the building is in Manhattan, but just where seems to shift in the series. According to producer David X. Cohen, the building is located on West 57th Street. Different episodes contradict this, though. In “Viva Mars Vegas”, the Planet Express building is stated to be located on 72nd Street. In “The Inhuman Torch”, the building is instead shown to be located farther south in Battery Park City.

8 Changing Style

The design of the exterior of the Planet Express building is pretty static in the series, but there have been occasions when it changed dramatically (especially when it was completely destroyed). Different versions abound in various episodes of the series, including a blue one the parallel universe of “The Farnsworth Parabox” and an emerald version, a nod to The Emerald City of The Wizard of Oz, in “Anthology Of Interest II.” The building also changes design with changing animation styles, especially in the episode “Reincarnation.”

7 Shifting Rooms

Futurama has changed in lots of ways since the pilot. The interior of the Planet Express Building never really stopped changing. Though the basic layout of the building remains consistent, such as the conference room situated just over the hangar, other rooms shifted or appeared out of nowhere.

The conference room leads directly to the employee lounge, but the other door in the lounge opens to all different kinds of rooms over the course of the series, such as the toilet, the kitchen, and the hangar again.

6 Angry Dome

A major architectural feature of the Planet Express building is seen only once. In “Kif Gets Knocked Up a Notch,” from the original Fox run of the series, Professor Farnsworth gets angry over Amy’s attempt to get closer to Kif out on patrol. “If anyone needs me, I’ll be in my Angry Dome,” he says and is next seen stomping around a small bubble on the top arch of the hangar. This dome is never seen again in the series, though it’s become one of the best Futurama memes only fans would understand.

5 Smell-O-Scope

The Smell-O-Scope is a pretty major feature of the Planet Express building, appearing in numerous episodes over the course of the series. One thing fans might not notice is that the astronomical odor detector changes location throughout the building. Sometimes it’s inside the building, sometimes it’s out on the widow’s walk that rings the tower, and sometimes it’s mounted to the Planet Express ship. Despite its massive size, it seems to be fairly light in terms of weight.

4 Chamber Of Understanding

Professor Farnsworth has tiny rooms for all kinds of occasions. Similar to the Angry Dome, he has the Chamber of Understanding. This glass dome with a mirror ball in it is where Professor Farnsworth goes to think. The chamber, though really another dome, is located in the conference room and descends from the ceiling. The chamber appears only once, in “In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela,” an episode from the seventh season which features more mistakes Zapp Brannigan can try and learn from.

3 Accusing Parlor

The interior of the Planet Express building has several rooms that don’t seem to fit anywhere in the space it has. One of these is the accusing parlor. The accusing parlor appears in “Anthology of Interest I” the start of a series of episodes similar in nature to the similarly nonsense The Treehouse of Horror from The Simpsons.

This old-style Victorian drawing room is where Farnsworth gathers the Planet Express crew to find out who destroyed his miniature of the PE ship.

2 Chart Room

Another room in the building that also doesn’t seem to be in the architectural plans is the Chart Room. This room is such a mystery that even Bender comments on it. In the episode “Viva Mars Vegas” Amy Kroker says, “I’ve summoned you all to the Chart Room to explain how we’re going to pull off a daring and complex casino heist, questions?” Bender provides some meta-commentary by saying, “Um, how come we’ve never been in this room before?” Amy replies: “I think this chart will explain that.”

1 Mandatorium

Another fantastic meta moment in the series is when it introduces yet another new room, but it’s actually one that fans were very familiar with. In “Bender’s Big Score,” an episode of Futurama that never gets old, Farnsworth calls a mandatory meeting of the Planet Express crew in the Mandatorium. They all assemble in the conference room, which is where they always meet. The Mandatorium is never referred to as such again, becoming another throwaway gag that the series is famous for.
