It turns out that the Legendary Birds of Kanto have cousins in the Pokémon version of Great Britain, and one of them looks more like a mascot from another video game franchise, as Galarian Zapdos can barely fly and has to run on the ground like a Final Fantasy chocobo.

Pokémon Sun & Moon introduced the concept of regional forms, which are Pokémon that have evolved differently due to living in a different climate. Pokémon Sword & Shield will be doing this with Legendary Pokémon for the first time, as Galarian versions of the three Legendary Birds of Kanto are coming to the game in The Crown Tundra DLC expansion. It’s explained that these versions of Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos are ones that migrated to different parts of the world and developed differently so that they have new types. Galarian Articuno is a Psychic/Flying-type Pokémon, Galarian Moltres is a Dark/Flying-type Pokémon, and Galarian Zapdos is a Fighting/Flying-type Pokémon.

It seems that the change in climate affected Galarian Zapdos more than its brethren. According to the official Pokémon website, Galarian Zapdos has incredibly powerful legs that allow it to leap in huge bounds, bounce quickly down mountains, and batter enemies with mighty kicks. The trade-off for this extra power comes at the cost of aerial mobility, as Galarian Zapdos’ wings have atrophied and it’s described as a poor flier.

A huge flightless bird with powerful legs that like to kick enemies makes Galarian Zapdos sound a lot like a chocobo from the Final Fantasy series. Chocobos are one of the Final Fantasy mascots, as they are big flightless birds that can be caught by the player, like to kick enemies in battles, and are poor fliers (but can glide for short periods of time). It’s also possible to breed or capture a red chocobo in several Final Fantasy games.

The Pokémon franchise has had no problem referencing other video games, with many fans (and Bandai Namco) pointing out the similarities between Zacian and Great Grey Wolf Sif from Dark Souls, so it’s possible that Galarian Zapdos is an intentional reference to chocobos. The only question now is whether the player will be able to saddle their Galarian Zapdos and use it as a mount as they ride around The Crown Tundra.

The Isle of Armor DLC for Pokémon Sword & Shield will be released on June 17 and The Crown Tundra will be released this coming autumn.
