New details have recently emerged for the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE — revealing specs for its processor, RAM, and software. Assuming this latest leak is accurate, the S21 FE looks like another incredible value from Samsung’s ‘Fan Edition’ umbrella.

One of 2020’s most surprising Android phones was the Galaxy S20 FE. It took many of the features and specs of the regular S20, swapped out its glass design for a plastic one, and was sold at a much more affordable price. Just a few months later, Samsung came out with the S21 lineup. At the heart of that was the baseline Galaxy S21, which for all intents and purposes, felt very similar to the S20 FE. It had powerful specs, a couple of missing features compared to the more expensive S21 models, and a lower-than-expected price. For shoppers that can’t quite stomach the cost of the S21, a cheaper Galaxy S21 FE is expected for release at some point later this year.

The folks at 91Mobiles recently discovered a benchmark test for a Samsung phone with the model number SM-G990B, which is expected to be the S21 FE. The benchmark reveals a chipset codename of Lahaina, which is better known as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. The benchmark also reveals 6GB of RAM and Android 11.

How The S21 FE Compares To Other Galaxy Devices

Compared to last year’s S20 FE, the Galaxy S21 FE should be a decent upgrade. The Snapdragon 865 found in the S20 FE is still a snappy processor here in 2021, but the 888 offers better future-proofing for people that plan on keeping the phone for a few years. There’s no change in RAM between the two devices, however, and Android 11 is the same software version found on the S20 FE today. That said, the more recent release of the S21 FE means it should be in line for one additional software update compared to its older sibling.

Compared to the S21, understanding the placement of the S21 FE is a bit more complicated. The Snapdragon 888 is the same chipset found in the regular S21, and based on previously leaked renders of the S21 FE, it’ll also have a nearly identical design. The 6GB of RAM is a step down from the 8GB found in the Galaxy S21, but that’s not enough for Samsung to make the S21 FE substantially cheaper. There may be slight downgrades to the camera and display, but those things on the S21 are already not that much better than what’s offered on the S20 FE.

Samsung may have found a way for all of this to make sense, but at least right now, it seems that the lineup of Galaxy devices could become rather confusing very quickly. The Galaxy S21 FE is expected to get an announcement this August, meaning there’s not too much longer to wait before Samsung makes everything official.
