Galaxy Z Flip 3 Vs Z Flip 5G What’s Different With Samsungs New Phone

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3 is finally out, and looks like a solid upgrade over the Z Flip 5G. With its latest flip phone, Samsung has tried to iron out some of the key shortcomings of its previous foldable phones, and has also introduced a few neat additions as well. However, the best part is that Samsung’s latest offering attempts to make foldable phones more accessible. Here’s a look at the differences between the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, and whether the new one is worth $1,000.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5G was a minor upgrade over the first Samsung clamshell foldable, packing a new processor and adding 5G support. However, it failed to improve upon the key shortcomings. The tiny cover display remained more of a gimmick than functional, the battery life was below average, charging specs were limiting and the phone cost more than $1,400. In short, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G was not much more than a smartphone that flipped.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3, on the other hand, offers a lot of meaningful improvements. To start, the 6.7-inch AMOLED display has seen its refresh rate bumped to 120Hz. Samsung has also applied a layer of protective film that is made of stretchable PET and also claims to have upped the screen durability by 80-percent compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 5G. The biggest display improvement, however, is the secondary screen on the back. The 1.9-inch cover display on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is touted to be four times bigger than the 1.1-inch screen on its predecessor. Thanks to the larger screen real estate, the cover display can now be used for amore activities, such as video recording, Samsung Pay transactions, and checking health stats to name a few.

Galaxy Z Flip 3 Is Faster, Sturdier, And Looks Better

The build quality has also improved significantly. Samsung has used what it calls Armor Aluminum to make Galaxy Z Flip 3’s frame, claiming it to be the strongest material ever used on a Galaxy smartphone. Corning Gorilla Glass Victus has also been employed to lend additional durability, just like the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Another noteworthy upgrade is the IPX8 certification, which means the Galaxy Z Flip 3 can survive immersion at a depth of 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes. Overall, the Galaxy Flip 3 is a lot sturdier than its predecessor and really worth considering for those who have worried about foldable phones being too delicate.

In addition to the durability, Samsung has also made a few internal upgrades too. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 finally adds support for mmWave 5G, comes with an upgraded stereo speaker system, and a faster processor in the form of Snapdragon 888 SoC. The rest of the internals, including the 3,300 mAh battery, 8GB RAM, up to 256GB of onboard storage, and connectivity solutions, remain identical. Both phones also share almost identical imaging hardware, down to the megapixel count, pixel size, field of view, and lens aperture value. The selfie snapper uses a 10-megapixel sensor, while an optically-stabilized 12-megapixel main camera sits at the back alongside another 12-megapixel camera for wide-angle photography.

The design is also fresher while looking less flashy. Samsung has ditched the Galaxy Z Flip 5G’s gaudy and chrome-inspired color scheme in favor of a two-tone design with a wider — and much more appealing — color palette. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is up for grabs in Cream, Green, Lavender, and Phantom Black colors. For those purchasing it from the Samsung website, an additional three colors are available — Gray, Pink, and White. A limited-edition, and pricier, Thom Browne version will soon be up for grabs as well. Overall, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a lot better value at $1,000 than the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, which is still listed for around $1,200 on Samsung’s website.
